My 1999 IS has developed a noise between 2000 and 2500 rpm -- all gears.  It is consistent when I pass through that band.  I've tried tightening the "rattle bolt" (did I get the wrong one?) but it didn't work.  Anyone had similar problem?  Suggestions?

Does it make the same noise when on the side stand in neutral?

If you can hear it, you can find it with a length of garden hose using it as a stethoscope.

If you are talking about the "buzz bolt", without telling the forum where you tightened it would only be a guess as to if you tightened "that" bolt.

Stock, modified stock, or aftermarket pipes?

If you have those chrome covers on the transmission, they are noted for that particular problem.

Thanks.  My IS doesn't make the noise when on its side stand and in neutral -- only when in gear.

Since the noise only occurs while running in gear I would submit the noise could be emitting from the transmission and the square cut gears which are noted for this characteristic.

My suggestion would be to try running a different oil to see if this will have an effect. A heavier oil or an oil with better additive features. Some have used synthetic oil with good results.  What oil are you now running?

You have yet to say whether or not your bike has those chrome aftermarket transmission covers, and also whether or not you have aftermarket exhaust pipes on the bike.

Thanks for the advice on oil.  I will try something different -- recommendations?  Probably not much heavier, given the northern climate.  No, I do not have the aftermarket transmission covers, and yes I have the MarkT exhaust system.  Actually, this is my second set of MarkT pipes -- I went up to the 5 inch stacks with the pipe organ silencers.  (Don't think it's them, though.  The noise appeared well after I'd installed the first set and remained constant.)
