Just received my new Cee Bailey shorter tinted shield and thought I'd check for any known issues, tricks, warnings, etc when opening that fairing and/or installing the shield in general.

I've replaced the shield on my standard before but have never cracked open that fairing.

TIA,

Gary

Watch out for screws that don't want to let go of the inserts. I've had 3 of them so far, and when I come across one, I remove the rest and pull the insert out with the screw still attached, then use pliers to seperate them and epoxy the insert back into the shell.  I also put anti-sieze on all the screws to prevent it from happening again.

Other than that, it's pretty simple - remove the left and right inner sides, then the chrome trim and you'll see the bolts that hold the windshield in.  TORQUE the bolts correctly when you reinstall them so you don't crack the new windshield.

What to remove:
1. Start with the right and left inner fairing panels.  There are four phillips head screws per side.  The wind deflectors don't have to come off.  The speakers will unplug so you don't have to let them dangle.
2. Now you can get to the four phillips head screws that hold the chrome windshield valance.  They are on the inside of the fairing and you'll need a good light and probably a stubby screwdriver.
3. Once the chrome valance is off, everything else removes from the outside.  There are four shoulder bolts (8mm) with rubber bushings that hold the windshield on.

What to watch out for:
1.  Most likely at least one of the phillips screws on the inner panels will be bound to the brass insert that it threads into.  If you get one that just turns and turns, don't just keep spinning it or you will wallow out the plastic.  Go ahead ad get your fingers behind the panel and pull forcibly while turning.  This will strip the brass insert out of the plastic, but you can epoxy it back in with JB Weld or any two part epoxy.  Put anti-seize on the screw threads upon reassembly to prevent this in the future.
2.  The rubber bushings have a thin side and a thick side.  I don't know if it makes a difference, but you may want to note the orientation so you get them back in the same.

That's it.  Just reverse the order for reassembly.

Gotter done.

Didn't seem to have the insert problem you mentioned.

Took a short test ride but I'll get a better feel for it tomorrow.

Thanks all for the feedback.

The only other thing I might consider if I go in there again would be a smallish power amp for the speakers, and maybe higher wattage headlamps.

Just replaced my headlight lamps with the Silver Star's (accessible from the rear without disecting the fairing).

Let me know if you find something in that small-ish speaker power amp, I could use one for sure. My wind noise ratio should increase with the new smaller shield that replaced the Showchrome taller wider job that came along with the deal.

Ordered as 13.5 inches as measured from the concealed, indented bottom center to the top, 2 inches shorter than stock.
