I have the tank off and empty and have removed the four nylock nuts that hold the sender to the tank. I've gently been rotating it around-and-around to find the magical orientation required to get the sender out of the hole that it has to fit through - without luck. I can see that the float/resistor portion is detachable from the brass stem but I haven't even attempted to disassemble the unit while it hangs half out the of tank without being sure that this is the right thing to do. The problem is: the white nylon plastic that is the actual sender circuit doesn't fit through the exit hole!? Does anyone know the magic words? (I thought it was XYZZY.)

It could be as simple as valkyrienorway.com where you can download the scanned version of the shop manual.

IF you think it is fun getting it out, wait until you put it back in uglystupid2 I just took my time and " wiggled" it gently with a little light pressure pulling it out. Good luck cooldude

I visited Dag's site and checked his manual and I also have a Chilton's manual. Neither addresses the float assembly. I think I'll take another shot at wiggling - again. I hate forcing delicate things - tends to not end well.

Okay, got it. It's a 3-D maze that has about 6 turns to thread the white nylon part through the hole . Going back in was more difficult but  tickedoff I got it done. Thanks all!

Caution!  If the wires aren't exiting to the rear then you have it in backwards and it won't give you an accurate reading.

Thanks John, good point as it will bolt up in more than one orientation. I marked mine before I removed it to be sure I got it back in right.

+1

Kind of backwards.  The hookup is to the front, ie to the dash.  So, you think the wires coming out of the sender should go ahead, but they go to the rear. It will go in the tank that way, but the reading is wrong.

My IS tank wires went out the side, and I was reading 1/3 when empty.

I was told at that time that the wires should be attached at the rear of the tank (clipped).
