I found an ad on CL for a 10" Southbend lathe. I was looking for a 10, even though I just bought a 9A. Anyway, I drove the hour to go check this thing out and as I pulled up in from of the house I told Joann maybe you better wait in the truck. The house was pretty run down, it had a house over a garage/shop. but it looked pretty ratty. There was a guy standing out in front to meet me, he looked rough. he had an old Harley tee shirt on and really, he looked like a homeless man. He was apologizing as I approached. He had been mistaken, it wasn't a 10 it was a 9... well I drove all this way, I still want to see it. So we went into the "shop"... Holy Crap!! The under side of that ratty house was a crowded shop, he had three small lathes and two bridgeport mills and a full blown motorcycle machine shop. There were bikes everywhere. Two real nice Confederates And I mean real nice. Many old restored antique bikes I'd say there were 25 collector bikes, and 10 hotrod bikes of different makes.
Here's the kicker. There was a car under a cover. I said "is that really a GT? He said 'well it ain't a Mustang" He pulled the cover off and there was a shiny yellow Ford GT. It was beautiful! he said he had it built special because he hates the stripes and had his painted without the stripes.
I'll bet that crazy old coot had 3/4 of a million dollars worth of vehicles in that ratty old "shop". I had left my camera and my phone in the truck so I didn't get any pics, and I didn't get a lathe either.

His house was worth less than his car. Undecided

As a single man I always wanted enough house to keep me warm, dry, and rested. The rest I wanted in the garage space, tools, and reasons to stay out of the house. Sounds like this ole guy is living my dream.

Why no lathe?

Because I just finished rebuilding a SB9A. I am looking for a heavy 10. He said he had one, but it really wasn't. I'm happy with my 9A but I had fun rebuilding it and wouldn't mind doing it again but with one a little bigger.

Man, that's a cool story. I can identify with the guy somewhat. When I was single I kept my bike in the living room and really only needed/wanted the house as a place to sleep and keep my stuff dry. I just don't seem to have a "nest building" gene.

I recently bought a 18" by 54" 1964 Cincinnati hydroshift lathe which I'm slowing learning how to use. Man, there's not much you can't do with a lathe.
