Just picked up a tub of the Bel-Ray waterproof marine grease. In the not too distant future I'll be pulling the rear end down for regular maintenance and curious re. using this stuff. Any suggestions, I've used my own concoction for the last few years with good results but like the idea of this being waterproof. We do get some liquid sunshine rather often in Florida. What have other users done with it, just schmooie(per Ratdog) it on or what??  I'll also be installing the double row bearing mod in the left rear while I'm at it. Although I've not had trouble with the rear bearings, I think I'll go to the local Miller Bearing and see what they recommend...maybe replace both while I'm at it.

This grease also appears to be OK for greasing the pinion cup, driveshaft and u-joint. Any thoughts? I'm debating on replacing the u-joint more as a preventative measure, keeping the original as a spare, I already have a new spare on the shelf. Just thinking out loud here, may not feel it's necessary when I pull it all down.

Hey John, I would really appreciate being allowed to watch, help and learn when you do that. Several guys at the ride the other day told me not to neglect the rear end stuff. Being a new owner I have no clue how to take all that apart. Thanks
PS..you don't check email do you??  LOL!

I use and recomend "Guard Dog 525 Moly Grease". It is a synthetic grease with a Moly additive and not at all inexpensive.

But Bel-Ray products are very good, and if I hadn't spent the $26.00 for those two little tubs of GD, I'd have Bel-Ray waterproof grease in my chemical cabinet. I always use Bel-Ray fork oil in all my bikes,...cause it's the best there is.

that grease will serve you well... i use it on my drive shaft splines. i have a valk trike so my driveshaft and u-joint are out in the open elements all the time..i pull the drive shaft off every 5000 miles to grease the output splines and the driveshaft splines and theres always grease left on the splines. even after riding in rain for hundreds of miles the grease is still there.. the nice thing about having an open drive shaft.. i can pull the shaft and have it back in,, in 10 minutes.

I hate to characterize you wanting to change out a perfectly good set of bearings (they're proven) with a new set of bearings where either one could be bad.

These are not my words but a poster made a similar comment in answer to a post just like yours.

That's ridiculous!

BelRay is all that my bike's have seen and the splines look good as new.  The dealer I got my I/S from recommended it.  Said that was all they used and never seen a failure, of course in their case that would mean Gold Wings.
It doesn't sling out or dry out.  I even packed the bearings on my CycleMate trailer with the stuff.  The hubs on the CM run cool while being pulled all day long.

john....i've used the bel-ray waterproof grease for many years now on my driveshaft (both ends), and on the universal joint.  i still use either the bel-ray assembly lube w/molly (contains 45 % molly). or molly-60 paste on my final drive, they both work wonderfully.  i would think that the bel-ray waterproof grease would work on the final drive, there has been several posts in the past where it has been used with good results.

Jeff, I haven't rec'd. any email from you in recent days, I check it more than once daily. As for observing the process, I have no problem with that. I've had many do likewise over the years, I'll let you know ahead of time when I plan to do it.

Ricky-D, I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."  Unless there's a problem with the right side bearing, it will stay put, I only plan to do the left side bearing mod. And...I like to press them in rather than pound them in even though I have a set of bearing/seal "pucks" that have worked quite well over the last 40-50 yrs.
