So are you saying it sounds like an electrical spark or something like that?

Or do you think it is a mechanical sounding like two pieces of metal hitting?

Do a search and you'll find discussions on this issue about 3 months ago.

I think it's the starter relay. Just an electrical Snap, sometimes when the bike is hot/warm. Others had different thoughts.

Slider, if that happens in hot weather, when the engine is heat soaked, when the bike is re-started after a short period of time, it's perfectly normal.   It's kind of a pre-ignition caused by hot deposits in the combustion chamber.

My 97 has done it occasionally since I bought it in 2004. Only happens if the motor is hot. Almost sounds like striking an arc with a stick welder but only lasts a split second.

I long ago decided it's nothing to worry about. But, after reading the above posts and thinking about it, I don't think it's happened since I replaced my starter relay.

Mine does the same thing when hot, and has only been off for a short time. Usually after filling up. My VTX did the same thing.

The discussion 3 months ago was mine. Due to hitting the wrong ramp I ended up smack dab in the middle of downtown Toronto, Younge and Bloor, in the middle of rush hour, with my reserve warning blinking.

Knowing it can take an hour or so to go a mile, and no gas stations for a few miles, I decided to turn her off at red lights to extend my reserve gas. 90ยบ and my fans were running, so close to overheating. The snap surprised me and got me worried, so I asked about it here.

Consensus was that it wouldn't damage anything, and that was 4,000 miles ago.
