I'm hosting a foreign film discussion night and our film will be Dhoom. If you've missed this bollywood action film I heartedly recommend checking it out. It is a fun film with a police action movie astride motorcycles.
Dhoompowered by Aeva

I've been a fan of Dhoom and Dhoom 2 for a while. It always bothered me that the characters did not reprise the role for a Dhoom 3. One had been in the works but stalled out. Some sources cited public pressure stopping the film makers from returning to the franchise. There was some concern that the movies were leading young people into dangerous driving habits. Actors were also arrested after Dhoom 2 because of some questionable on scene kissing which is tame by American standards. Honestly, it is tame by modern Bollywood standards too but this movie was used as a conservative talking point trying to prove a point. The public overwhelmingly was on the side of the film. The Dhoom franchise could go down in Bollywood cinema history as a turning point in film. It isn't completely alone, but it does seem to be a particular target for conservatives and the new vanguard.

Putting together my notes for Dhoom for the discussion on Wed, I realized that rumor has it a Dhoom 3 is coming out soon.

On 2 February 2011, Yash Raj Films confirmed that the third installment of the series would go on floors at the end of 2011 and planned for a December 2012 release. The film will feature Aamir Khan playing a negative character while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles. Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor). It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment.

Even better, the original stars and composer are all returning to the project!  I particularly enjoy Uday Chopra in both films.

I won't be able to catch Dhoom 3 in theaters but I'll grab it on DVD.  If you like great chase movies and don't mind reading subtitles this is a great piece of Bollywood to check out.

Valk related or not? I don't know.

All I know is I rode my Valk to work today. After a few classes and grading business letters I'll be hosting the first Foreign Film Night here on campus. We're showing Dhoom the Bollywood action movie (with Japanese motorcycles).  A few students will hopefully come. I've picked up pop corn and we'll be in a big room with comfy chairs.

I hope to have a little discussion afterward about the film. That should be fun. I don't claim to be an expert. I'm just someone that has watched the film a few more times than they have. Hopefully we'll get a discussion.

That should prove to be a perk to my job today. I'm looking forward to it.

Commute to ride, ride to commute.

I have learned much about Indian Biker Films since my first viewing of Dhoom and Dhoom 2 back in 2009. I have also grown an appreciation of modern Bollywood films in the past several years. It is amazing how quickly I have fallen in love with Hindi films.

Sunday, my wife and I were in Charlotte. We found a Bombay Bazzaar by happenstance. They had a wall of spices and henna for my wife to peruse. I found myself looking at racks and racks of Indian cinema. They were almost all previously viewed and priced reasonably.  It turns out the $1.00 and $2.99 discs without covers are partially that cheap because they don't have English subtitle. That's good to remember.

I did pick up Charas: A Joint Effort because it starred Uday Chopra who I enjoyed in Dhoom and Dhoom 2. Where Dhoom reminds me of Torque or Biker Boyz, Charas reminds me of Angels Hard as they Come if I had to compare it to an American movie. Like Dhoom a pair of buddy "cops" are on a man hunt. This time it is in the rural mountains. They are traveling by common motorcycles.  Another group/club of bikers shows up in town because they are being used as drug mules. Missing persons, fights, and political intrigue all in the first half of the film. Sadly, my DVD froze before I could finish it. I'll try cleaning up the used disk when I get a chance and finishing it. It seemed great.

So, if you're interested in international biker films this might be one to add to the list.

The only Bollywood movie I've seen was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Boxer rebellion, the Holy Child. They all pay their rent.
But none together can testify to the rhythm of a road well bent.
Saddles and zip codes, passports and gates, the Jones' keep.
In August the water is trickling, in April it's furious deep.
