Fork Oil Level

Anyone know a easy way to check the fork oil level without taking the tube off. The manual gives specs with the tube off, the cap removed and fully compressed. I had a leaky seal (left tube) that lost an undetermined amount of oil before noticing it. I cleaned underneath the seal lips with a plastic shim and it doesn't seem to be leaking for now. The tube holds about 24 oz. and I don't think I had a big enough mess to say that much was lost but I would feel better if a measurement could be done easily. Any ideas?

rio will....there is really no easy way except raising the bike...loosening the top pinch bolt...take the caps off...pull the springs (both of them.)....compress the forks, and measure the oil level from the top of the tube.

Ah RATS!!!.....Guess a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.....the king salmon run is starting in the Sacramento River so I guess the oil level can wait another day....Thanks,

I survived a fork leak for about 9 months before getting around to repairing it. It still had plenty of oil left.
From my experience, you could put off the repair until winter without damaging anything.
When the time comes, I found 4 youtube videos that may help guide you. Easy step-by-step instructions.
Look under "VTX 1800 fork seal."
