My '98 Valkyrie

The guy I bought it from had the fork seals replaced a month before I got her and I have had a problems with my 98 since then. It seemed to me that there was no suspension.
Today I decided to pull the fork caps and see what I could see. Here goes...... I pulled the right fork cap and the forks dropped about two inches, I then put a ratchet strap around a 4x4 beam in my garage and hooked it to the handle bar to put some tension on it and was able to start the cap and I tightened it up. Then I took the cap off the left fork and the front end dropped 6 inches. Wow, I was not expecting that!!!!!! So.... I hooked the strap back on the handle bar and hoisted the front end back up and was able to get the cap started, tightened it up. I then took the cap off the right fork and put some fork oil in and took it for a ride, What a difference. When I got back home I took the cap off the left fork and it only dropped about 1/2 ". The bike rides alot better now.

That is not supposed to happen when you only remove the caps.

It sound to me that they have been messed with and some parts are not put back together correctly.

If he took the caps completely off one at a time, with the wheel still on and hanging, they can drop a little like that. It'd drop further by removing the left cap vs. The right cuz there's more play in the damper in the right fork. 6 inches sound like a lot, though.

I wouldn't have done that.

I have to agree that something isn't right. I guess I will have to pull the forks and go through them. But it does ride better now, there is some action in the forks on the little bumps, there was'nt before.
