Couple videos of the crash here, not good, 3 dead, over 70 injured. They say more will probably die from injuries. Pilot 80 years old, wtf http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44556695/ns/us_news-life/#.TnQTaNSO5Bk

PLEASE don't get me wrong, I mourn any loss of life as the top priority, but I also can't help but shed a tear for there being one less WWII era P-51 Mustang in the world too... Truly a sad day...

Some of the local news are reporting 12 dead. I was just there yesterday to watch the races and see the Thunderbirds. It is a sad thing....prayers for all of the families involved.

80yo pilots are not rare at all. General (civilian) aviation is a dying sport/hobby.
My brother, who flies his Cessna 172 from his FAA approved backyard runway, at 53, is considered a youngster.
The pilot in this crash was 74.

That was an odd crash. Clearly there were some mechanical malfunctions. It's tough to come up with words to describe the loss of loved ones.

my friend was in the stands and fortunately for him and his friends they are all ok. the plane hit about 100 feet from them, he said there was blood and body parts and people asking for belts to use an tourniquets. he said it was a sight no one wants to see. so thankful for his safety and prayers for the families of those not so fortunate.

If it were a Spitfire I'd agree but the P-51 is actually pretty common. The military sold thousands of them into private hands after the war and guess what people did with them? It is sad. I'm surprised to pilot had a valid medical to fly a high performance aircraft.

no one knows what actually happened yet,,sounds like you are putting the blame on the pilot but it could have been a mechanical failure and the pilot actually steered the plane away from the stands as much as he could before impact,,,

Even complete, flyable P51's are relatively common. Beautiful, but common by warbird standards. Although I seem to recall the one that was crashed was a B model and as P51's go those are kind of rare. I also like them better than the bubble-tops.

According to war-bird stats, less that 150 p-51's in flying condition world wide.

Take a look at how many Spitfire's and Zeros there are. At this point were arguing petty minutiae but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_Supermarine_SpitfiresApproximately 50 Spitfires and Seafires are airworthy with another 20 currently undergoing restoration to flying condition.

Yeah there's no way to tell from that video if it was mechanical failure or pilot error.

Yeah there's no way to tell from that video if it was mechanical failure or pilot error. I guess if they find tail feathers 1/4 mile away that could help answer the question.

There is a photo posted on av-web, taken moments before the crash that clearly shows the horizontal stabilizer trim tab is missing, that coming off at the speed he was going would cause very adverse control problems.

Yeah, on an inherently unstable high performance airplane trim tabs are very important. That could be a pretty good indicator right there. Might have also had elevator issues related to it as well.
