I just changed the rear tire today at 152,939 miles.  Here's a pic of the drive splines:

They look almost new!  BTW, the O-ring is the original, and most of the time I used some Valvoline multi-purpose grease from an old metal can I bought in the 1970s.  I could probably have used WD40.  For the first 38,000 miles I never even loosened the 4 nuts on the final drive!  But later when I did remove the final drive for driveshaft maintenance, I made sure to tighten everything in the proper sequence.  That BY FAR is the most important thing to keep in mind when you work on the Lady's rear end!  Just be sure to tighten the axle nut BEFORE you tighten the 4 14mm final drive nuts.

That looks Great!!!!
Pulled my rearend apart yesterday....  13,000 miles since the last time.... cleaned it up and re-greased everything.... Lookin Good!!!!  My 1st Valk with 30,000 miles... dealer doing the tire changes..... splines were SHOT... more than 3/4 gone....   Loosening the 4 pumpkin bolts to get a good alignment is REAL important.....and if ya take it all apart, a good chance ta look at the splines on the driveshaft and lube  em up....
13,000 miles on the Altimax.... shows very little wear.... I will probably need to pull it all apart 2 more times before I change the rear tire....

BTW  Also changed the oil in FB's Spyder and the Valk....
I can change ALL the fluids on the Valk and pull the rear end... in less time than it takes to change th oil in her bike..... Talk about "tupperware....Every panel on the left side has to come off......  But FB is gettin pretty handy at strippin it down and putting it back together!!!!

Most manufacturers have a maintence schedule fer a reason. 152939 miles on those splines looks to me like a dang good reason to follow the maint schedule!! Reckon you gonna get another 500000  600000 miles or so out of them?? 2funny What ever you are doing-keep doing it. cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Amazing!

Btw, you can never overlook the possibility that a few pumpkins were NOT installed properly on the assembly line for whatever reasons. While most pumpkins were assembled together as they 'should.'

What did you use to clean off all of the old lube? Those look like they just came off the manufacturing line.

Yep, mine has 92000 on it and splines look as new or at least I can't see any wear. Original o-rings, and some lubriplate moly grease I bought many years ago.
Like others have said, I believe the key to  is the four fasteners on the final drive.
