Do the left and right grab rail plates (77350-MZ0-000 and 77360-MZ0-000) on a Tourer need to be removed when installing an I/S Trunk with the SuperValk mod?  (Parts #13 and $14 in attached MicroFiche link)?  Hopefully I can leave them on and use the original backrest when I want to or add a small bar between them to go "solo" look.  Any idea why one rail is abouot $37 and the other $70?

TIA !

As the trunk mounts to the Interstate grabrails, the answer is twofold.

You will have to either replace the tourer grab rails with Interstate items, or do some very significant mods to the rail and backrest support to accommodate the trunk mount.

Alternatively, you could cut the nut cages, change the grab rail mount bolts to come from the inside with acorn nuts on the outside and more easily swap between the tourer and Interstate rails.  Of course, that would still leave you with dealing with the top shock bolt.

Thanks Willow....I have the I/S grab rails that came with the trunk....I may be confused on this but it looks like the grab rail "plates" that the sissy bar attaches to on a Tourer fit between the fender and the grab rails.  I guess I need to know it they would also fit under the I/S rails when I swap them out and, with the sissy bar removed, leave enough clearance between the top of the grab rail place and the bottom of the I/S trunk. Shocked

No, they won't fit under the trunk hardware. To make them do so and to provide two mount points are the serious modifications you would have to do to make the tourer grab rails work with the trunk.

The trunk rails would pass about halfway between the two holes on the backrest support.

   Neil
Here is another way to look at it.
If you were to remove your fender all you
would have sticking out back would be
the side rails that your sissy bar is on.It
has two bolts that go through it and bolt to
the back side of the fender next to your tire.
then it also is bolted at the top mount of your shock.
The only way I was thinking about was make some kind
of plate for the IS grab rails that would fit over the bolts
that the Is trunk fits to and then have you sissy bar on that.
You will have to notch the mounting hardware on the bottom
of your trunk to allow you to remove it when you want.
Go to BigBf web site and take a look at what I am talking
about on that.

This is about the cleanest conversion to Super Valk that I have seen... You can go either way, trunk or no trunk and it's quick and clean:

NiteRiderF6 is definitely right, that gentleman had the slickest SuperValk solution I have ever seen.  I managed to track down his email address and contact him about how he fabricated the adapter.  He told me that he had access to a machine press at the time which he used to punch out the piece.

Since my tool collection is not quite that elaborate, I bought new fender rails and grab rail plates for the conversion!!
