I was online with GEICO and noticed something that I hadn't seen before.

At the bottom of the page was the following notice:

Quote
If you are driving to Canada, you will need to order Canadian Non-Resident Insurance ID Cards. To order the Canadian Non-Resident Insurance ID Cards, you will need to select the "Canadian Insurance ID Cards" link from the Proof of Insurance main menu.

I seen alot of threads about traveling in Canada but I've never noticed anyone mention this requirement.

Is it something new?

I have lived in Georgia since '93 and travel a fair amount back to Canada. I have been getting the alien insurance card ever since I have been down here.

I do not know if it is REQUIRED - but better safe than sorry.

Just got back from Canada in June. I checked with my insurance company on the same thing. Allstate of Michigan. They told me it was NOT required. So I went without it.  Smiley

I just did an Iron Butt around Lake Superior before InZane and got my yellow Canadian insurance card from Progressive just by calling them up. Why take the chance? There was no additional cost. Fortunately I didn't need to show it.

I've posted about this before, usually in threads about folks headed to/from Alaska.

You DO need the yellow card. It should be free from your insurance company.

It boils down to this:
Your insurance IS valid in Canada
Your insurance CARD is NOT.

They don't check (and don't care) at the border. It only comes into play with tickets or accidents. Without the yellow card, in a ticket or accident they treat you as if you have no insurance. Could mean as little as getting them to verify/make a phone call, or as much as impounds and arrests until verification is received, depends on the situation and the LEO/agency involved.

Bottom line, the card is free. Can't hurt to get one.

I get one every summer (even with no plans to travel to Canada). Same reason I carry my passport if I'm headed anywhere other than a commute...ya never know when I may want to take a spin north.
