Over 300 schools nationwide are closed because of threat of H1N1.  The pork industry doesn't want H1N1 Flu called swine flu anymore because they feel it is hurting sales.
Swine...H1N1... is a viral cousin to every other strain of flu  and works like most other flues.
Stay healthy this spring riding season.  Caution is probably warranted. The media scare is probably not needed. Wash your hands, keep your germs to yourself, and try to out ride it. coolsmiley

So far it's a load of bloody hogwash.

36,000 people died of flu in the USA last year.

45,000 died in automotive crashes.

440,000 died from smoking.

So far 1 Mexican child brought into the country from Mexico whilst already suffering from swin flu has died.

Flu deaths are common amongst children, the elderly and those already weakened by other illness.

The Dept of Health and Bollocks has already released this

"As this flu virus outbreak expands across the country, we have been taking necessary steps to ensure states have the resources they need," said Sebelius. "The 13 million additional treatment courses that we will purchase will allow us to replenish our national stockpile and further ensure we are prepared to provide the American people with the treatments they may need to stay healthy."

Note the air of panic in the words - "As this flu virus outbreak expands across the country".

Could this be s moke creeen to distract us from the global financial problems? Surely not  tickedoff

My local Sams Club had someone wiping down all the cart handles with Colorox wipes.  Typical knee jek reaction.

I agree Brit,
Although...shopping cart handles are quite nasty things generally, so let them wipe those down. Everytime I am at Walmart I see some kid using the carts as a teething ring and those cart teethers never look particularly healthy.

I'm still convinced that hand sanitizer is bad for us so I rarely ever use it. I think it kills to many helpful bacteria on our skin and damages our skin. At some point in a few years a fear laden government study will point out that nurses are dying in waves because they've overly sanitized themselves and the rest will follow.

Are we dead yet?  His numbers are a little dated now, but a good read.

that would explain a lot...hmmm...can we prove we're not dead?

Derrida, the philosopher, routinely questioned how do we know when we are asleep versus being awake.  He would explore that the only reason we think this is the 'waking' world is the consistency of waking up where we went to sleep and having similiar days versus the chaos of the reality we call 'dreaming/sleeping.'  However, that premise assumes that we live in a consistent world.  Perhaps we live in such a disconnected chaos that in fact our dreams search for consistency and create dreams of the routine and mundane, rather than the reverse that we expect.

And now RP asks, "Are we dead yet?"  Interesting.

Read this to see the panic level being promoted

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-05-01-swine-flu-friday-main_N.htm

Absolutley pathetic that we have become a nation of panty waisted, namby pamby, scaredy cats .

Closing down a school cause a kid on Wed had flu lile symptoms but by BLOODY THURSDAY was back at school. What a bunch of hand wringing, bed wetting, old frickin women.

God help the next generations cause they are gonna be a bunch of plonkers walking around scared of their shadows.

Might as well open all the borders, get rid of any immigraion laws and get the end over and done with so that the nation suffers a quick death instead of a slow lingering one.

It's a political ploy by the Obama Administration (esp Joe Biden) to get the nation thinking of something else besides the current administrations actions or inactions, the stock market, the economy and unemployment.   Is this "the test" Joe mentioned.....  hmmmm     2funny

This is just a continuation of what has been going on in my area for the past 15 years.  They have removed the high dive from all the pools.  The school yards have had the slides, swings, and monkey bars removed.  Dodge ball banned, anything that might have a chance of some child skinning a knee or something is banned.  When we were children we learned something the day we got the guts to climb the ladder of the high dive and looked down at that small pool, and then closed our eyes and jumped.  Kids today don't get those experiences.  Around here most parents don't even allow their kids to walk to school.  Do not ever leave you house so that nothing bad will ever happen to you.

one possible case in my hometown, now the high school, middleschool, and YMCA are closed for 7 days, I hope it goes no further will be tough for me if the grade schools close and I need to find a way to watch my kids all week. I understand being cautious, but this will be tough on a lot of families...

I think that now is the time to read Stephen King's "The Stand" if you haven't already.
Or they should run the miniseries on tv.  I would imagine after watching that people will be bathing in hand sanitizer and buying painting masks in gross.
It might stimulate the economy!
Tonight's movie "The Stand" brought to you by purell.....

It's the media and the government jumping up and down like a 6 year old girl screaming "Look at me! I'm relevant! I SAID LOOK DAMMIT!"

And it's a no lose situation for the government...when it turns out to be a bunch of hooey about nothing they will point out how well they protected us and it was only because of their extreme tactics that the threat never materialized.

And as a populace...for some reason...we believe.

About 36,000 die every year from regular flu.  None have died in two weeks in the US.  Except one that came from Mexico already sick and near death.  Yet, it sounds like the world may come to an end!
The bird flu scare a few years ago.  The world health org predicted 250,000 or more deaths.  Actually, 250 died.
What a bunch of chit.
Lets scare all the lemmings, so they will support all our socialist programs to save them.

Last night me and the family was watching “supernanny” and they had a family from Florida with a pool in the back yard.  When the nanny said that 250 children between the ages of 1 and 4 drown each year from swimming pools in America I just started laughing!  Out of how many millions have pools, and only 250 die a year!!!  People love to be afraid of everything!  What I hate is when they want me to be forced to wear my seat belt and have a helmet on or else they’ll give me a $10 ticket!!

Yes, but how do we know we're not being deceived by an evil demon who is manipulating our thoughts.  Derrida would have loved the Matrix.

An example of the hysteria (Posted on a blog for my HS, this is from a teacher) :

Well...you may not remember.... .but I went to Mexico recently. I just got back April 20th, and that day was the beginning of SWINE FLU....
I was sick when I returned, still don't feel quite right, you know GI issues from the food, because I know better than to drink the WATER. So I took a day off from work.

Well that created a Mass Hysteria in my building. Principal called me in, "I had nightmare's that you contaminated the school, and kids were dying." She continued, "Are you sure you don't have SWINE FLU?"  I tried to reassure her, but she was still freaking out. On top of that kids started rumors and called me "SWINE FLU!" Teachers avoided me, one even put a mask on in my presence.

I decided...enough with this...called the Travel Doctor and went in. He laughed at me, and tested me, and gave me ciperol for the bacteria. Then charged me $80...I
do not have the SWINE FLU, but I gave the bill to that principal!

So.... yes..... I ....for one.....am SICK OF SWINE FLU!!!!!

Good on you making them pay the bill.

One of the guys out at the shop, just got back from a trip to Mexico, and the firkin medical insurance coverage they have at the shop is making him get tested before they will let him go back to work....

OH, man, is the boss pi$$ed off.......

Then our former Governor who Bam Bam appointed to the Agriculture Secretary is bitching because they called it Swine Flu, guess that is the reason it is now H1N1 or vise versa.....
