Saw this and got ticked off!  Can someone give me a reason WHY you can’t be excited for making a touch down?  I don’t care if the other teams feelings get hurt, they didn’t do their job!

The rule is there to keep college football from becoming like Pro football. I agree that that particular violation was minor, but it was a violation according to the rules. It has more to do with the lack of TEAMWORK & DISCIPLINE, the two things that made football so popular to begin with. ( the two things that professional football is lacking now days) pro football is less and less about teamwork, and more and more about the individual.

Aren't you tired of mid field dances when a running back gains 7,8, 10 yards like they get paid to do? Aren't you tired of the dances in the end zone? I know I'm tired of the antics that occur when a defensive lineman does what they are paid to do and sack the quarterback.

College football coaches were seeing these things happening and decided that they wanted to try and keep the game focused, I applaud them for it.

I think a kick off penalty is severe enough, they should keep the touchdown.  JMHO. hoser

Never saw my favorite player ( Barry Sanders)  do anything like that. I have coached High School football and had a hard time with players taunting others over a 7 yard run, etc. What happened to letting your performance speak for it self.

That's why one of my favorite players is Heath Miller of the Steelers.  Gets his 8 - 15 yards, gets hit, gets up, hands the ball to the ref, walks back to the huddle.  Pure professional, no showboating.

One of the specific (and first to be banned) is the pointing upwards which is to give glory to God.  So I guess this is just to show that its not religiously motivated, they have to ban all expression.  Just play, look serious, dont be unique, someone may disagree.....sheesh

Hey, Hoser.  The new rule is designed to stop college stars' self-celebration.  The problem is that it can punish the non-star player who is simply jumping for joy.
I know we are discussing the college game, that is why I don't want the penalty to include
taking points off the board.  If they feel they must do something, just make the team that scored take a yardage penalty on the kickoff.  I am not convinced they even need that.  My favorite college team lost a touchdown and a game due to a reciever catching a pass and scoring and facing his schools student section and saluting the crowd.

The video has been removed, but I hate excessive celebrations in the end zone. It is especially offensive when they do an "in your face" kind of thing. I always appreciated what a coach told his team years ago. NOW, I don't remember if this is attributed to Lombardi or Bud Grant of Vikings, both great coaches in their lifetime. One of them simply said, "When you get to the end zone, act like you've been there before.

When a team has a whole litle dance routine all set up to go when someone scores, I usually change the channel after I see that they've been penalized like they should be.

I also like the way Michael Jordan handled things when someone stopped him and got all uppity about it. He would simply point to the scoreboard, since they were usually ahead, then come down and dunk one right over the top of the smartmouth. cooldude cooldude

I saw the play, and while I agree it was minor, it WAS taunting, which I despise. I personally don't like the new rule because it's going to cost some school an important game...oh yeah, they're all important

sorry you missed viewing the video.  it basically was a punter that faked the punt, ran it in for a touch down and at about the 7 yard line he put his arms out in a "WOW I MADE IT" sort of way, then was called back for "unsportsman like conduct".

Actually ALPH,
He offered the ball with outstretched arms to one of the opposing players who was chasing or closing in on him just before the goal line. (YES, briefly)

I agree with you that it was not excessive celebration, but he was taunting the other team with the ball, that was the reason for the penalty.

just goes to show you how far RULE makers will go if they are allowed to.  Most are hatched due to a valid concern then become a slippery slope and before you know it you arent allowd to fart

I didn’t see the video; just read the recap of the play.

I played College football (not very well though) and was the coach of our Junior High School team and a part time assistant in High School. Here’s my take; I like the rule, to a point, but everyone has to remember that these are just kids, playing a high pressure game, but it’s still a KID’S GAME!

I first heard the quote above - “act like you’ve been there” – attributed to "Bo" Schembechler. I have no idea who originated it, but I couldn’t agree more. I don’t like all the silly dancing, shaking and carrying on, but if it’s spontaneous and NOT taunting, it should be allowed.

Again, I didn’t see the play in question but if it was as described, with the kid taunting the defender as he ran towards the end zone, then it was a GOOD call. If for no other reason; the kid running KNEW the rule. ‘Taunting’ or ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ rules have been in place a long time.  He should have been flagged; for his stupidity if nothing else!
