Used up the last of my chrome polish today. Problem is it was some homemade  paste stuff in an  OLD coffee can that was made by my passed grandfathers passed neighbor.  Asked my dad about it and he said grandpa used to get it from the neighbor who used to be a precision tool maker. This stuff was amazing. Rust, dirt, mystery crap, no problem. I guess the question here is does anyone know about any really good chrome polish/cleaner.

The best results I've come up with is Simichrome, but it takes some elbow grease.

White Diamond is really great on wheels and other aluminum, and it works on stained chrome as well... However, I think you should use it with care on chrome for it's abrasive qualities can remove chrome as well.

I like Flitz the best so far. Really easy to use and just plain works. Comes in liquid or paste. I prefer the liquid. Been using it ever since the last time the Honda Hoot was held in Asheville, '99 I think. Eagle One's Wadding Polish is some good stuff too but I mainly use it on aluminum. I've never tried White Diamond but I might soon - I'm just about out of Flitz.

The best I've found is FLITZ.  works well on aluminum or any metal, non-abrasive and leaves a protective coating.

I've rescued two bikes from neglect.  I've used a bunch of stuff. Flitz seems to be the best all around cleaner / polisher.

here's a before

Here's after

Most of you folks know this I'm sure but one little tidbit I've picked up over the years is, when possible, always make your polishing strokes lengthwise on chrome. Any scratches that you might accidentally cause will be harder to see if they follow the contours of the piece. Just one little piece of grit under your cloth is all it takes to make a scratch.
Paint is different... with paint use circular motions.

BTW, nice job of resto there, Ray!  cooldude

I have 3 cupboards in my garage with any and all cleaning and polishing products that anyone here has ever suggested.  I sure wish I could get my money back.   Roll Eyes

A chrome plater told me several years ago to use nothing but Windex on chrome.  That anything else would scratch.  Well, that may be ok for chrome that hasn't been out in the elements on a several hundred mile ride.  So....for aluminum and chrome, the BEST thing I ever found is..............

Magic Mix  "The Lazy Man's Metal Polish"  cooldude

http://www.valco-cp.com/Magic%20Mix.htm

Magic Mix Metal Polish delivers shine and protection to aluminum, stainless steel, chrome, gold, silver, copper, brass and magnesium. Other paste-type polishes only permit small areas to be shinned at once. They cannot be allowed to dry. If allowed to dry, the polish becomes very difficult to remove. But with Magic Mix Metal Polish, users can polish an entire surface, allow it to dry and simply dust it off. What’s left is a beautiful shine without the repetitive rub-on, wipe-off exercise required by other polishes.

I had forgotten to re-order more Magic Mix and heard of the White Diamond, the Freightliner truck dealer in town carried it.  It is almost identical to Magic Mix.  So much so that I may stick with that as it can be bought 3 miles down the street.
