ETOWAH (WATE) - A tip led the McMinn County sheriff and a detective to find a moonshine still Tuesday morning in an old dairy barn at the foot of Starr Mountain near Etowah.

The farm is on County Road 881 and the owner accompanied the officers.

The operation apparently involved the production of so-called "wineshine" or home-made brandy.

Sheriff Joe Guy said they found five 50-gallon barrels of alleged muscadine and apple-based homemade wine in one room.

The still, which had a propane-fueled "cooker" and a "worm" for distillation, were in the next room, according to Lt. Detective Eric Allman.

A small amount of marijuana was also found at the residence, as well as a mini-still capable of producing smaller amounts of liquor.

The products were destroyed and the stills were dismantled and taken as evidence to the McMinn County Justice Center.

Investigators believe the case will result in criminal charges after conducting interviews and consulting the district attorney general's office.

Sheriff Guy, who also serves as county historian and has written extensively on local history, said the operation was especially interesting.

"You see old pictures of sheriffs doing this 60 or 70 years ago, so it was quite an experience to investigate and locate a crime that is surrounded by so much regional heritage and legend. It's just not something we see every day, and may never see again," the sheriff said.

That's just another example of the 'man' keeping us down.

I don't have a lot of use for laws like this one.

They bust this family for preparing for the hollidays. Hell I used to make wine at home, fifty gallons at a time. There are beer making kits for sale in a lot of places. If he would just have shared with the right people, it would be ok?
Gone are the days of good old moonshine ( yeah right)
I am not a regular drinker, but I have enjoyed good moonshine, and would not turn down another offer. I guess it is a tax stamp issue.  LIVE LONG AND PROSPER.( also, seek out another still)

Okey Dokey, here we go..............
Pluggy's exactly right! Zinc is an issue IF you let it "season" in the "jar". Most good 'shine don't last that long, trust me.
Now lead, on the other hand WILL end you if you're not careful! There's no real way to detect lead that I know of, so's ya gotta buy from a "distiller" ya know and can trust. Someone who's been in business a long time with a long standing reputation, (read; smart enough not to use old radiators to get out cheap).
Here's the first and most important "hillbilly" trick to spottin' good 'shine..............!
Shake it in the jar, real hard. If the bubbles settle quick you're usually good to go. If they linger, then there's a good chance it's been run through a radiator, (or worse yet, cut with either kerosene or turpentine!).
Good, true, family recipe shine is a Blessing From God IMHO & it's a D*** shame to see it becomin' a thing of the past in our politically correct world today.
I'm seriously consider'n fire'n up the old pot still & growin' me some "backr"!
Peace to those who believe we EARN'D the right to our "bad habbits".
Thanks for lettin' me rant, Mr. Whiskey.

In some states, Illinois for instance, It's legal to produce a certain amount of corn "ethanol" for personal use. Every time I purchase yeast at St. Louis Wine and Beer making co. I always tell them I'm making ethanol. They seem to get a kick out of it.... cooldude

I love the way this news article closes with the quote. The reader can read several things in the Sherrif's statement. It could be saying, this will never be a problem in this county again as in moon shining is being stopped. It could also be saying, I don't plan on busting another still so please don't tell me about the in the future. It is an interesting last line.

Not that taxes aren't a motivator, but Pluggy's right. Homemade shine can make you very, very sick and since the person making it is probably not the most trustworthy of individuals...

I already posted this recently but eff-it. I'm gonna put it up again because it rocks.

this last summer when we had our gathering at Maggie Valley i was thinking about how neat it would be to get some "moonshine".  just to try it, find out what all the mistique is all about.

i'm a bit of a natrualist when it comes to foods.  i like my sweets to be naturally sweet, not made from corn syrups, or glycols.  there's an art being lost each time the government goes and "makes things safe for us".

thanks for sharing that sad story with us Joe.

This is a funny video because it butches this George Jones song that nearly any cover band can nail.

Luckily, Waylon Jennings picks up the tempo a bit.

I do like to hear different versions of the same song. This one should be self explanatory.

What you're saying makes no sense, at least as it pertains to this. One of the things that makes you sick in home distilled spirits (aside from amateurs not realizing how little of it can give you alcohol poisoning) is IMPURITIES.

Just get some Everclear. Sure it doesn't have the outlaw tingle, but it's clean and (relatively) safe.

Was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a chance to "taste" some shine two weeks ago at the Alabama State Championship shoot. Mighty fine stuff, I'll tell ya. It supposedly came out of here in Tennessee somewhere, don't know where. Fella sure knew his whiskey makin'.

Thats the truth of good shine. Plus its what gets everyone in trouble. If its good it'll go down like water. Had some good stuff last summer. The white strawberries should've been the first hint, but I wasn't in much of a condition to be paying attention to details......But smooth doesn't cover this stuff.

I had moonshine once...2 shots.  It could be that or all the beer I was drinking, but that was one of the only times that I was so drunk that I actually cannot remember large portions of that evening. uglystupid2

As to the "front runnings" of shine making, I saw an episode of 1000 Ways to Die on Spike channel where they covered this topic.  It looked pretty gruesome!

My first experience with good "sugar liquor" (what an old friend called it) put me in a comma! 2funny He gave me a 1/2 gallon that smell and tasted nasty when hot so he told me to put it in then freezer for a while.

About 30 years ago I was going juking and as I was getting all duded up I took a sip of it out of the freezer and there was no taste or smell. He warned me to just drink 1-2 ozs. at a time ...slowly.

Did I listen? No! I drank 2 -20 oz. glasses back to back in a matter of minutes saying "ain't nothing to this stuff". I just went from drinking to commatized, didn't even have a chance to get high! Grin An ole gal dropped by a couple hours later and she thought I was dead. She said she hollered at me, slapped me and poured cold water on me and I didn't even move. She said my eyes were rolled back in my head with my tongue was out of my mouth! The next morning when I woke I had a hair dryer in one hand, brush in the other all decked out with my cockroach killers on and A Stetson hat on my belly wondering what happened!! 2funny and I never was a big shine drinker after that! 2funny

When I was in the Fire Dept several years ago, we went to an EMS Conference at Pipestem State Park in WV. Met some folks from the area and they turned us on to some of the most delightful 'Shine. They said they made it themselves and offered us some to take home. Nervous about that a little, I asked them how they made it. He said he would show me. We pulled up in front of this kind of trashy little house, I'm already thinking "UH-OH" what have I been drinking?? Went inside and he took us to the back of the house and opened the door to the "Still Room". This place looked like a laboratory. Clean as a whistle, huge glass and stainless beakers, the worm lines were all glass, high tech burners, 40 gallon stainless tanks, exhaust systems, etc. He wouldn't even let us in the room unless we took off our shoes and slipped on white coveralls. These guys were serious about their "Lightnin" as they called it. The big Cherokee guy who owned the place and had the secret recipe, they called him Chief, gave us all a gallon to take home and enjoy. He said it was just his hobby!!

I don't remember if it was the first or second InZane held in Paducah KY, but one of the nights I was hangin' with Jerry (Paris, for those of you that remember him), and he had some home made 'Stupid in a Jar'...  He gave me maybe 3 - 4 oz, and said that I'd be good for the evening, and I should just sip it...

I do know we had a great time that night, and I also know I woke up face first on my bed, still with all my clothes on, probably in the exact same position I fell in to...

I remember thinking, "this stuff ain't so bad"...  That's the last thing I remember thinking  uglystupid2
