I have a custom fairing and it has spots for speakers.  The openings are pre-marked for holes but I'm not sure what size speaker to purchase.  4" or larger.  Can someone measure a speaker from screw hole to screw hole across the speaker and give me the distance on a 4" and if someone has a 5" measure the same...

I'm thinking its a 4", but the speaker hole is alot bigger then 4"

Thanks for any help

You say it's a custom, as in one of, or is it something you made fit?  What brand of fairing?

If you can fit 5-inchers in there, I've found they have significantly better sound than 4".  In fact, I installed 5" Alpines in my Wing, what a difference over 2 different sets of 4" including Electrical Connection's and Blaupunkt.  I had to do some cutting internally in the pods and on the speakers but it was worth the effort.

We need to know what "Custom" fairing you have.  Are there mounting bosses / standoffs on the inside where the speakers are screwed to?  Dimensions across those bosses would be a help also.

sorry steve, I was trying to get some information before I got home.  I'll get more detailed information tonight.  The fairing is a hoppe that they no longer make.  uses the current shield and has dimples in the fiberglass for screw holes... figure if I knew what a 4" speaker measurements across the mounting holes I could see if they fit.  I'll measure mine and throw that out here and see who can match them.  Seems I coudn't find a specification for the actual dimensions for speakers, only the audio specifications.  I think smokin' joe has the same fairing.

OK.  There is a specific speaker for this fairing, I have one on my Std.  I done some checking to see if these speakers were still available, just in case, and they are.  I think I saved this information to my computer.  Let me do some checking.  If I can't find it in this machine, I'll pull a speaker and look.

Well, had to pull a speaker.

Here is what I found.

The brand is SeaWorthy Sound Systems by Prospec.  Model 5572BB Max power 40 watts.

I can't find exactly what I have.  The model numbers are slightly different.

These have the same mounting hole diameter of 4 1/2" (what I have),  listed as a 5" speaker, but higher wattage:  I would not go any larger than a speaker needing more than 4 1/2" hole.  They are molded one piece.

This is the best price I found.

Just do a SeaWorthy Sound Systems and/or Prospec search.

Here is Prospec's site. Send them with an email with your questions.

There is a retailer in Vermilion, OH...Harbortown Marine.     www.htmarine.com     440-967-8072

I hope this made life just a bit easier.  Wink

PS.  The fiberglass appears to have been taped.  I bought new screws when I got the fairing.  6-32 SS SHCS (stainless steel socket head cap screws)
For first hand info, contact Glen Woods of Woody's Fairings.  He designed and made all the Hoppe fairings for the Valk.

From screw hole to screw hole is 5 1/4 inches.  fiberglass would require metal clip (I can find since I work at Honda fairly easy).  Actually hole opening is 4 1/2".  So, my concern is what size flange and hole spacing is on what speaker?!  From hole to hole across the speaker the screws need to be 5 1/4 on center or close.  fiberglass thickness is 1/8"

The measurement on mine is 5.150, just a little shy of 5 1/4.  Opening is 4 1/2.  If you get the speakers I gave you a link to, you should be set.
Where did you find the fairing?  They are hard to find.  I think only 97 were ever made.

Got it from a board member. I'll have to look to see who it was.  Going to get it painted this winter to match the bike. Thanks for the link!

Yeah, those are 5" speakers, I measured the hole spacing (diag.) at 5.12" Those original Hoppe fairings had counterbored holes with # 6-32 nylok nuts epoxied into them to hold the speakers from behind. That one is either made by someone else or was repaired because the Hoppe never had that heavy cross-roving cloth on the windshield flange, they were all laid with 3oz. cloth. That 5572B speaker has been replaced by Prospec/Seaworthy with the 5582B. Different grill appearance and slightly less weight. Supposed to be a hair more efficient design, I can't tell the difference by ear. According  to their website they still offer that earlier style in chrome as the 5572C like these ones;
