ABATE, AMA, & MRF rep.

« on: October 15, 2011, 04:53:37 PM »

Last weekend we went to an ABATE fundraiser campout and I had my bike in our toyhauler while Damselfly rode. It was quite a party and local politicians came to donate their own money and answer constituents questions.

We collected near 20K for Hospice of MI and about 6K for a granite monument for fallen ABATE members.

The ride home was quite nice with light traffic until we got into metro Detroit. We got on to Southfield Rd. that normaly four lanes both north and south.  We got stopped at a light just before the four lanes became one lane.  My wife was ahead of me and I was just behind her in my pick-up pulling my trailer.

As the light turned green we both prceeded into the intersection,....when all of a sudden my truck shook and I heard twisting metal.  A woman ran into my trailer.  She was trying to get in behind my truck when "out of the blue a trailer crashed into her".  Really????  Shocked

She said she was concentrating on the light so that she could safely merge behind my truck,....and did not see my trailor.  She also did not have Auto Insurance. Thank god I was the buffer for my wife.

See it all the time at work driving my garbage truck. Cars pull out of side roads, back out of driveways, , and rear end us and they all have the same Excuse, "I never Saw You!"  These things are 40,000lbs empty and covered in flashing lights.  You think it'd be kinda hard to sneak up on someone with one of these!!!! If most drivers can't see things this big, everything else is a crap shoot! Shocked

... and then this trailer appeared out of nowhere!   What an idiot!  Frankly, I wonder why I ride a bike sometimes.  Usually the problem is some dipsh$t with a cell phone.

Glad to hear that no major damage was sustained.

When I was a kid in Lansing, Michigan, there was a van that you would often see that said all over it " Caution Blind Man Driving!"...... It wasn't until I was 10 ish that I figured out that is was a window covering installer......... I used to think, Darn, he's doin a really good job of not hittin things!!!!!!

A good friend, in Florida, was hit while on his bicycle. He ended up on the lady driver's hood. He broke her windshield with his arm. She continued to drive for about a half a block. She stopped because she could feel his bike scraping underneath her car. She was 80+ and mostly blind.  tickedoff

This reminded me of a time when I was a kid. We were living in Hawaii and during one Armed Forces day, Pearl Harbor was opened up for public tours of the base. This was back in the 60's.

Anyway, we were walking along and my Mom says "Hey, lets go see the guy dying over there!" She said this in a real happy and exciting way. I was probably about 7 at the time and I was totally freaked out by this. I stopped in my tracks and my Mom and Dad were going on about us hurrying up to see the guy dying. I started crying. This was surreal.

Well, it was a guy DIVING. With the diving suit and helmet.

All better now.

As to the trailer, remember, people can't see trains and hit them too. Despite the arms across the road. lights flashing, a set of tracks where only a train can be, klaxons and train horns going off, and the ground shaking like only thousands of tons of metal can shake it, people still manage to not see them and hit them.

What makes you think they can see your little trailer? LOL

Stay safe.

Just tonight, about 8:30 p.m. on our way back from a wedding. We were driving down a residential street and got behind a brand new Honda Accord. Could tell from the three heads inside, the youngest one in the car was about 80.

They were driving down this pitch black street with no lights on at about 30 mph. Kept going from edge to edge... convinced they were going to end up in a yard. I got up close so at least she could use my lights to see something. She promptly put her turn signal on and turned left into someone's front yard!

I walk up and asked if she was ok, telling her that she didn't have her lights on (for whatever reason, this car did not have automatic lights). She nonchalantly says, "I don't know how to turn them on", "this is the first time I have driven at night". I turned her headlights on for her, to which she responded, "the bright lights are on now".

I switched it to low beams and she backed out and off on down the road they went...   Shocked

Right after i got out of the navy i got work doing building maintenence. Which in the winter included plowing snow with a four wheel drive 3/4 light green G M C. High lights above the plow a rotating yellow beacon on the roof two more rotating yellow beacons on the salt spreader 4 way flashers on and the spot lights on and turned out from the truck. 4:30 A M the parking lot is lit up with those yellowish sodium vapor lights. One of the bosses secretarys piles into the drivers door with her Chrysler and bout turns me around. Are ya ready?? Slid out the passenger side and walked up to her car which was puking a LOT of anti freeze and asked her why did you run into my truck??? Her answer was-my lights blinded her. uglystupid2 The company did NOT charge her for the damage to the G M C. coolsmiley And she kept her job. RIDE SAFE.
