I am leaving this morning for a ride and was going thru my pre-ride. I can't find my stock dipstick which I always use for checking my oil. I leave my Tel-True temp. guage/dipstick in and just switch out with the stocker for checking oil and oil changes. I can't see any oil on the Tel-True stick. Can't remember where it should read on this stick, as I never use it. Can someone help me out? I just don't feel comfortable leaving with no oil on the stick. (it never has leaked or burned)

Unless the oil is really dirty its very difficult to see it on that dipstick. The oil doesn't come very far up on mine but it is readable in the right light. Try wiping off the stick completely, dipping without screwing, with the bike upright, and then using a flashlight or something to look for the oil sheen. I'd go look but my bike is in storage already.

Those dipsticks are really like idiot lights.... and not a highly calibrated gauge of sorts. Usually you "calibrate" your Tru Temp with the stocker and then mark it. I have a Tru Temp and mine could very well be calibrated differently than yours. Best best would be to make sure at least there is some oil on the stick with the bike in the upright position.
To be sure.... drain the oil, change the filter and add 4 quarts .... then mark your stick.

From the flange the o-ring sets against to the add line is 9". from the flange to the full mark is 8.5" on the stock dip stick

The dark portion at the bottom of the stick is the thermometer. I have found with my bike on the side stand, that the top line where that area ends corresponds to full. But teletrue says not to use that line, so I don't.
Comparing mine to what others are saying is way off. So I would go with what someone else said. When you change the oil, put in exactly what the book calls for, then mark that as full. In the meantime, don't start it with NO oil on the stick. It's hard to see, but with the bike upright the oil should be above the thermometer area I mentioned.

On mine, I just run my finger on it after I wipe it off. If there's oil on it... good. Don't know about no oil because it has never gotten low...... Its a Valk fer Petes sake!!!!!! lol
Seriously, I have a 2000 I/S and change the oil every 2500-3000...... barely uses and oil, I get almost 4 quarts out every time... I know because I use the bottles to take to the recycler...... If I ever find the stick dry, theres a problem......
