Hi all,

Rebuilt petcock per Shoptalk.  Upon testing it prior to putting back on tank,  the plunger retracts when vacuum is applied but does't want to return when vacuum is released.  Where is the check valve to release the vacuum, in the outside cover?  I sprayed both sides of that with carb cleaner and am now letting it sit.  If I take unit apart and reassemble the same thing happens.

Thanks,

Brad

Most vacuum petcocks use a spring to return the plunger.

In the outer cover on the vacumm side there is a pressed in alloy disc. There is a very fine bleed hole in it, mine was blocked and this held the vacumm on the diaphragm.
Cheers Steve.

Did you not get a new cover in your rebuild kit?  Undecided

Most of the aftermarket kits don't include the covers, just the innards. Rebuilt mine with a kit from K&L last spring for 12 bucks.

Ah. Didn't know that. The cover is included in the OEM kit and there is a dampener in it that can clog or be damaged. If you're going to stick with the OEM petcock, I'd recommend getting the kit that has the cover set (OEM apparently)

Didn't know about the dampner. Ill make sure to get a "Stock" kit for my next rebuild. At the time I did the rebuild, the stock set was on backorder, and the dealer was able to get the K&L kit overnight.

Is there any way to "clear" that hole in the cover?  It is soaking in carb cleaner overnight.  Maybe try using a needle in the hole?  Thanks for putting me on the right track.   Brad

A pin would clear it.
With mine I used the smallest Letter bit I had and opened it up a little, also added 2 tees and hooked up all three inlet nipples to the petcock. Used the Letter bit to make up 3 orifice plugs (used some small round solder I had make the plugs then drilled them) that are installed in the hoses at the nipples A vacumm guage showed no pulsing in the line to the petcock.
On my second Valk and have only had the orifice block up, never any other failure of the petcock.
Mate has a 97 that is still on the original petcock.
I really don't know why so many people have so many failures and if they were in fact failures or incorrect installation back on the bike.Would like to hear what the exact failures were

How do you know your petcock needs rebuilding?

I pulled the tank for some other work I was doing and forgot to turn valve to off first.  When I pulled the hose off the petcock there was a fuel fountain!  I quickly turned it to off.

When you put it all back together leave the fuel hose till last. That way you can check the selector shaft is not holding the petcock off it's seat and that the vacumm side is holding when the petcock is on ON or on Reserve.
