I would like to hear from those that have done this mod.
what do you think of it?
would you do it again?
what about MPG?
what about performance?
Thanks in advance.

I did the "simple ECT Mod"on my 98.
The torque curve is a bit better, thus better acceleration below 3.2K in any gear..
I do get great mileage but I can't say it is due to the ECT Mod.
I also have an 2K I/S with a 4 degree TW; wished I knew about the ECT Mod before I put in the TW.
My next Valk (A 97) project bike will also get this modification ASAP.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I did the ECT mod on two Valks, one Tourer and an I.S.. I installed a potentiometer so I can dial in just part of the 10 degree difference in advance. I use midgrade gas to avoid pre-ignition.
Since I can turn the advance off, it's easy to see what difference it makes. I get a couple of mpg more with the ETC mod working. Unless I have too much fun with the throttle.
I like it and would do it again.

Did the ECT mod and lost 2mpg.  Except for increased RPM it was hard to start and really didn't help my bike at any setting.  I haven't used it since.

It's just my guess and may be wrong but I wonder if the reaseon that some get no improvement in mileage or worse is that 10 degrees advance is just too much advance. Try installing a potentiometer from Radio Shack and set it to 1/2 of the rpm increase.
I bet your mileage will show an improvement. Though as always, YMMV

Not really.

Either modification are duplicative and employing both could possibly lead to motor damage through misapplication.

i've got to agree with Rick on this one. if you have 4-6 degrees of advance with the trigger wheel, then add 10 degrees of virtual advance, you might be in trouble.  Shocked

I tried everything to get that to work.  Mine has the pot attached and I did 3 tanks at 50% and 3 tanks at 100% and both were lousy.  Mine just didn't like the advance with the current stock (?) carb setup.  I will be doing some tuning this winter and try again in the spring.  maybe with a well tuned bike its better.

I did the ECT mod.  Gave me about 4mpg more.

I think it's better than the trigger wheel because:
1. It is (optionally) adjustable up to 10°.
2. It makes the bike easier to start when cold because it doesn't add to the ICM's advance.
3. It's disabled when the transmission is in neutral preventing high idle rpm.
4. It fades out above 3k rpm letting the ICM do the job.

If not using the pot, I'd suggest you use a 1k resistor instead. (close to the center of the pot's adjustment)
It's important to use an audio taper pot (not linear).
Adding the pot gives you a resultant resistance range of 0-2800 ohms with 800 ohms being at the center.

I had the usual problems with the 6° trigger wheel before removing it and going with the ect mod.
Never looked back.

if you didn't buy it new, are you sure it doesn't have and aftermarket trigger wheel?

You should start a new thread on the glasspack question. You will get more helpful responses. Besides, it's bad form to hijack your own thread.  Grin

No need to apologize. Around here on a scale of 1 to 10 that infraction doesn't even rate a .5  cooldude
