Some people invest in stocks. Some people invest in properties. I invest in metals. Finally, I have acquired my dream pistol: a Coonan .357 magnum. This is a 1911 frame pistol chambered for the .357 mag cartridge (the revolver cartridge, NOT.357 sig). Back when I was 17 (1986) I saw one of these in one of my father's Gun Digest books and immediately fell in love. Well, back then I hardly had the means to purchase one, and by the time I was 25 or so, the company had gone bankrupt. Well, fast forward to 2010 and I was doing an internet search on classic Coonans and found they were going back in production. In March of this year I put money down and placed my order for one. It came in last Friday. Hand made, hand fitted, sub-700 numbered, and gorgeous (in my opinion). I ordered it with the adjustable target sights, as this will not be a carry pistol for me. I guess good things DO come to those who wait.

I always dug how they got the .357 revolver cartridge to work reliably in an auto without all of the goofiness of the gas-op IAI designs (AKA: Desert Eagle). Cool gun.

Very nice gun! I'll admit my personal preferences in the "It's Bigger!" realm lean towards either the extreme (My S&W 500 revolver) or the rube-goldberg (My Desert Eagle), but that's a VERY nice gun you've got there! Wanna see a range report once you've gotten a chance to put her through her paces!

I have a Desert Eagle in .44 mag, also. And it's a nice enough pistol, but I like the simplicity of the 1911 .357 design of this Coonan.

My first full-size 1911 (5" barrel), arrives at my local, friendly neighborhood FFL today. I'll go pick it up about 10 AM or so. I already have a mini 1911 (3.5" barrel), but I have a set of sambar stag grips to fit a full-size 1911, so naturally, I had to go out and buy a gun to hold my grips!
Film at 11:00!

And to think that I started this a long time ago with my sons. In the arms race, they soon caught up with me and passed me. This Coonan has put Chris so far in front that I've given up.
Oh well, wait until I get my cataracts fixed and are able to see the sights again. I'll match my Browning Medalist up against anything that Chris, Mark, or Wayne's got (if you don't add points for the size of the hole(s) in the paper.

Great pistol, there is no round more deadly in a handgun that a .357 mag. Hoser Well, actually, there are more documented one-shot stops with the .357 125gr JHP from 4" bbl Smith models 19 - 66 because that's what our cops carried for 30 years before Glock, etc. That doesn't mean if all those guys and gals had been shot with .44 mag 240JHP from 7.5 bbls that a whole lot more of them would have been one-shot stops than the 125grJHP. I'm not saying it's not a great defensive round, it is.... but the statistics are skewed in favor of what our cops carried for 30 years.

I think what Hoser may have meant by "deadly" was that if you factor in the accuracy along with the stopping ability of the .357 hollow point then it's considered the benchmark for personal defense. There are lots of other handgun rounds that will put a bigger hole in you but some are less accurate or harder to manage in combat shooting.

I'm sure that there are a lot of undocumented one shot stops from the .45 ACP in military action. Both of the two calibers work! The .40 S&W 135 works too. Arguing this is like arguing oil or tires. There are many more that work such as the .45 Colt, .44 special, etc.

I agree, I like all defensive rounds, but the .357 is my favorite. Comes from being a wheel gunner, I guess. Hoser

Sweet, USA made. How many does it hold? I was at a gun store yesterday looking at a older 30-30 Winchester. Happened to mention I had a Winchester in .45 Colt. He wanted it bad. He said he may pay me up to $1000 for it. Sweet, since I only paid $250 in the late 90's.
