I'm not sure if you are aware of this but I certainly got a shock when I learned about it.
For those on Medicare and involved in an auto accident related injury.....from a letter I received from AAA last week......."some types of medical coverage do NOT provide protection for auto accidents. For example, Medicare, Medicaid or supplemental Medigap policies do not provide coverage for auto accidents if no-fault benefits are available. Similarly, almost all private and group sponsored retiree health benefit insurance plans that rely on Medicare to determine coverage do not qualify for coordination".
In my case, I have Medicare as my primary coverage and Blue Cross (retiree) as my secondary. I called Medicare, Blue Cross and AAA to see how this impacts me. My best understanding is, in MY case, Medicare does NOT cover me as primary in case of an auto related accident. Blue Cross, under MY coverage, follows Medicare and they do NOT cover me as secondary. I need to pay an premium (best guesstimate is roughly $100/year) to AAA for initial medical coverage and any expenses remaining will be picked up by Medicare first followed by Blue Cross. I've been on Medicare for two years and did not know this. I asked all of them what would have happened if I was involved in an an accident since I turned 65 and not paid for the AAA coverage and why didn't anyone tell me about it when I turned 65. From here the answers were all over the place but they all pretty much returned to the basic premise that for ME, I need the AAA coverage. There is something about a $300 deductible if I DON'T have AAA but it gets cloudy and hard to understand.
BOTTOM LINE: Perhaps you know about this already and it's no big deal OR you have no clue like me and need to follow-up with your own personal set of circumstances to see if or how you are covered. I'm still looking for an explanation of this I can understand.
I'm ASSUMING (UH-OH) this might also apply to riding the VALK or other M/C - now it's M/C related
