I am refinishing an IS tank for installtion on my 99" STD.  I plan on staying with the basic Black and matching the original color.  I've shopped several solids shops with good reps about doing the paint and am getting hit with questions about the types of paint I want to use and finishes (type of paint, paint supplier, clear coats, 2 parts).  Thought this would be the simple parts  uglystupid2.  These guys want to get it right and I don't want to end up with a Fact-O-Bake looking paint job.

As a starter - Does anyone know what was the process used at the factory for the original paint job?

Does anyone know of a non-technical website offering a basic summary of paint and finish types explaining pros and cons?

Any first hand knowledge and experince would be gratly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sambeaux

Paint at the factory was by a Robot.

If they are a good qualified painter, all you should have to do is give them the factory paint code and go from there.

Good Luck.

PS:  You do want the tank clear coated.    I'd suggest 2 or 3 coats but, I'm not a painter either.

For what this is worth I can tell you the complete paint finishing system for the Honda Valkyrie.  I worked for the company that built the paint finishing system for Honda's cars and motorcycles for 15 years.

This is how the tins are painted

The parts are dipped in a phosphate tank to clean the metal, then are dipped in 2 DI water rinse tanks.

The parts then go through an E-Coat tank that gives the metal a negative charge to hold the paint and apply the primer, then is ran through the E-Coat oven to bake.

Next the parts go through a cooling tunnel and enter  base coat spray booth where robots apply the paint, and then are run through hot air blow tunnel that preps paint for the oven, the parts then enter the base coat oven for baking

The parts exit the oven and enter another cooling tunnel and enters the top coat one spray booth where the paint is sprayed, then through another hot air blow tunnel that preps paint for the oven, the parts then enter the top coat one oven for baking

The parts exit the oven and enter another cooling tunnel and enters the top coat two spray booth where the paint is sprayed, then through another hot air blow tunnel that preps paint for the oven, the parts then enter the top coat two oven for baking

If the part painted is a two tone, then the parts are then sent to the two tone booth for masking.  From the two tone booth it enters the two tone spray booth where the paint is sprayed, then through another hot air blow tunnel and enters the two tone oven.

Again this process is duplicated

The final step is the clear coat one and clear coat 2 spray booths which duplicates all the other booths.   The ovens are set at a temp of 150 degrees if my memory is correct.

Its a very complicated system but this should give you some idea of how the paint shop is set up.

I'm glad this subject got brought up.......I'm looking to get a couple fenders painted in the near future myself.

Is there a certain type paint to use, or just give the guy the paint code (black....does it matter?) and tell him 2 or 3 clear coats?

Anything else I need to know before I go to a paint guy?

Thanks Dave - Good Stuff   cooldude  cooldude

From what I've read on old thread most folks are using a base coat / clear coat combination which would imply a Polyester or Urethane system.  I undersatnd that in most cases the urethane will be a two part system which is more difficult to work with but provides better durability. PaAs I am staying with the orginal factory black, match the color won't be an issue.

Looking around a found this site - http://www.thecoatingstore.com/Types_of_Car_Paint.html

Has some good general information on the different systems and clear coats available.

as long as the painter can colour match (if the rest of the bike paint has faded any new paint will appear different even if the colour code is correct) then it doesn't really matter what type of paint is used .Enamel is generally cheap ,as is acrylic and is easy to touch up if you get stone chips down the track ,2 pack is the most durable and has a very hard glossy surface finish but not easy to touch up later .Mine was repainted in a water based base colour(doesn't react to any other paint or contaminants already on the metal) and finished with 2 pack clear coat.very happy with results.
