I took the petcock off. But didn't look close enough when I took the petcock off and filter with o-ring.
The question I have is on the filter and o-ring.  Does the o-ring just slide on the lower end of the filter?
Then put the petcock and filter back in or once I put the filter on the petcock,  do I push the o-ring down into the petcock.  Don't know if my question is clear, but does it fit loose on the lower end of the filter.

Take a look at the parts fische at: http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=148103&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1998&fveh=3466

Or one of the other parts suppliers on the web.

The way I've done it is to slide the O-ring down the tube of the petcock and then the screen; install the petcock assembly into the tank. Leave the nut a bit loose so you can adjust the petcock to align with the on/off/reserve lever.

The O-ring is there to seal the screen to the petcock so there is little to no chance of gas being able to bypass the screen and going directly into the petcock and gas line.
