LONG VIEW, N.C. -- State troopers charged a woman with DWI after fatal wreck near Hickory killed a father and son.

Troopers said Stephen Moody, 42, and Kevin Moody, 19, were killed when Amie Jo Skeens' car hit their motorcycle on Airport Rhodhiss Road in Long View.

Police said Skeens crossed the center line and side-swiped another motorcycle first before crashing head-on into Moody's motorcycle.

The two on the first motorcycle were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers arrested Skeens, 37, about a half-mile away, whose damaged car was parked down a dirt road.

Neighbors said they saw Skeens wandering through the woods. "She thought she was at her grandma's house," Josh Parkhurt said.

Skeens attempted to kick a Channel 9 reporter who was on the scene and tried to question her. Skeens did tell Channel 9 she was high on drugs, but not driving. "I couldn't have been driving. I was too high," she said.

Skeens has been charged with DWI and felony hit-and-run causing death. Police said she could face other charges as well.

Skeens was jailed with bail set at $30,000.

Skeens was convicted in 2006 for drug possession and in 1996 she was convicted of a crime again nature, both in Catawba County.

In court Wednesday morning, 37-year-old Skeens had a much different demeanor. Tears streamed down her face as she made her first appearance on DWI and felony hit-and-run charges.

Skeens told the judge she did not have a job and could not afford an attorney, so she was appointed one.

After her appearance, she ignored reporters outside the courtroom as she was ushered down a hallway by police. Two people who knew her were also in court, but they declined comment.

She is scheduled to make her next court appearance Nov. 16.

What can I say but it happens way too often.

Same thing happened on HWY441 and Hwy61 three years ago.

High on OXYCONTON, woman kills one biker, cripples another who is owner of Tommy's MotorSports, Tommy Norman lived but he will

limp for life.

The other an avid sportsman leaves two small children and a young wife.

It ain't right, but the cage always wins.

A 49 yr old biker was killed this morning about 7:30 am on the road I had traveled earlier this morning arround 5am. A ford F-350 pulled out on highway 146 in front of the bike from a farm to market road and the bike T-bone the drivers side. I don't why no charges were filed. Angry
So far no charges have been fine against the truck driver. He said fog was part of the problem. I know when I went thru there earlier this morning there wasn't any fog at all.
This highway intersection is 8 miles from a town in either direction.  I don't understand how wrecks like this happen. The highway is 4 lane with a center turn lane and straight as an arrow.

I'm sure in some convoluted rationale in her mind she's not at fault, it was however gave/sold her the drugs.

sad day indeed.

I'm just south of Hickory (down 321)  and I didn't hear about this. I must be at work too much and not watching the news enough.

It is horrible around here. The courts are turning everyone loose on probation unless you are a violent criminal. Meth labs everywhere and a slap on the wrist. Unfortunately things like this accident are the results. I feel bad for the LEOs bust the same folks over and over.

Very sad indeed

one reason I dont mind travelling on interstates for my long rides is that somebody
is not gonna cross that jersey style median unless they are airborne

I dont freak out around trucks on an interstate goin my direction but these roads
some of y'all take winding left and right with driveways and dirt roads comin and going make me jumpy  my head and eyes are always searching

and those farm roads where you are just hypnotized by mile on mile of corn and then a tractor just crosses in front..... you always need to be hyperaware because it can come from anywhere and
not just high, but cell phone, stereo, turning to check a kid it can happen anytime

Enjoy every day my friends and hope there are many more to enjoy

Prayers to the families of those killed and those on the scene who tried to save them. And dont anyone dare say to me why give prayers

It is sad.

When people tell me to ride safe - I reply with "I never ride safe - I ride paranoid".

Too many times I have maintained eye contact with the cage/truck driver as they pulled into my lane with me.

I ride to have fun.

SOmetimes I have fun by scaring the cages.

This is another way to make them see you,, act crazy.

Weave a little.

Wave at anything.

Be conspicuous.

But that is easy for me.

As I am hyperactive anyway.

Maybe not for everyone, but it works for me.

Just got this email from my friend in Hickory

This one will stay with me!

http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/news/2011/oct/26/update-woman-charged-dwi-hit-and-run-fatalities-ar-1540922/

I was on my way home from work last Tuesday and saw a mini van coming at me on the wrong side of the road not three miles from the house!! "Why are you driving that smashed up van with all that fluid and steam coming out of it and a gert big hole in the passenger side windscreen?" I thought! Once she got back on her side of the road and out of my field of vision after a near miss I could see the debris lying in the road not 100 feet ahead!  I could see her panicked expression as she screeched past me not 4 feet away! Reaction kicked in and I span the Camry around and sped after the *****, followed her and called the cops and turned her in. She was pissed out of her mind, couldn't hardly walk.

After several taped interviews with the State Troopers they tell me they plan to go after second degree murder X 2 and forty years.

Thankfully I didn't have to see the carnage due to chasing after her!!

The first bike carried a Father and son, she side swiped them and knocked them into the grass verge suffering bumps and grazes. This happened just over the center line in a bad bend, she then proceeded to hit the second bike head on square on the wrong side of the road killing a 42 year old and his 19 year son instantly and didn't even let off the gas! The irony is that both bikes and passengers had all just left a motorcycle training course.

snuggleing sickening, I plan to attend any and all court proceedings should she dare not cop a plea!! Put her under the snuggleing jail!!

The scary part is that between 3 and 6 seconds earlier IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ME!!
