I was just looking at available items to install into my IS trunk on my Tourer, and on searching the Polk speakers that seem to be a good upgrade for the Valk IS, Polk Audio DB501 5-Inch Coaxial Speakers, I found that they also make a DB401 4-Inch marine speaker. With the 4" being a little cheaper, and I would think also requiring no modification to the rear speaker pod, unlike to make the 5" one fit, that the 4" would be a better choice. Why would the DB501 be choosen over the DB401? Broader freq. range, higher Watt out put (better sound)? Like already recommended, this is the system I was going to install. http://www.motorcycletunes.com/products.asp?cat=148

sound is much better, mod is inside the cover and takes about 7 mins a side. you do not have to cut the speaker steel itself.

As I understand it, the 501s have better low frequency response, so more bass. As you reach hi-way speeds the bass is the first to disappear, so better low freq response in your speakers keeps the sound fuller at higher speeds. When I upgrade my IS sound system, I'm going with the 4" DB501s, and maybe a small power amp. Fred.

The 4" ones came up as the DB401. I would think the DPx01 would be the same, with x being the speaker diameter. I looked everywhere to find the proper specs for the 2 speakers, without finding them. But I just thought of soemthing, I should check out Polk's web site instead.

I just replaced my 2 front speakers with the 501 and the difference is amazing. Im going to do the same to the rear speakers in the trunk but i removed the trunk to have a super valk. The wife loves the new speakers but still wants her trunk back

I've got my winter project ready to go. I'm going to install four Polk Audio DB501s and a Sony XM-4S amp. The amp will fit nicely inside the fairing.

Found the data, only in the manual.
DB401 4" dia 85-22kHz 91dB SRP $99.95 DB501 5" dia 65-22kHz 93dB SRP $89.95
For most of my driving, I'm sure I'll be going the way of using the head sets I picked up, so over the intercom, which would also mean while driving 2 up.
But with the current rider, my T, the only sound will be from the external speakers, and it's my co-pilot who keeps on asking me to increase the volume from the speakers in front.

Do you think the stock Valkyrie radio can drive the 5" speakers by itself or will an amp be needed to supply the oomph?
By the by, I found earplugs (the swimming kind) really help to hear the radio, they cut out all wind noise so in the exchange the radio is much better and easier to hear.

From what I have read about the Polk upgrade, most are happy with the improved sound quality, without having to add an AMP.
Then there are those who have or want an AMP anyways, for higher output.

If you have a short shield or cut your shield down you can not hear the speakers. I cut my shield down and painted it black, i love the look it gave the bike but i cant hear my radio. Guess its back to a stock shield
