The Twilight Zone

On helmets. I have always worn an open face and now want a full face or preferably a modular for around $100 or so. I like the Bell Revolver and the main complaint is wind noise. I like the idea of flipping it up for a drink, putting on shades, etc. I also ride without one sometimes in the summer and don't know how the wind noise could be any louder. uglystupid2

I am wanting one mostly for keeping out the cold air. I tried on on at the Honda store and it sqaushed my cheeks like a vice and felt claustrophobia setting in! Grin

After hours of going to websites and reading reviews, any help will be greatly appreciated. Wink

Thanks,
Tony

Don't know about finding something for the $100 price...  Quality may raise that bar a bit.  Bell???  Aren't they big $$$?

Look at the HJC Sy-Max.  Had one a few years back, and it seemed to be good quality, and served the purpose for me, that being cold/foul weather protection.  They can be had for $125 - $150.

Good luck in your search.

A Fulmer modular should cost around $125.  HJC Symax are a bit higher.  I have both and like both.  A Fulmer saved my head 4 yrs ago.

I have a Zeus 3000B.  It was around $200.  It is one of the quietest on the market but I still find it loud and I think they are Snell 2005.  I use it most of the time even in the summer.  My face doesn't get burnt so much and I find it actually cooler to wear then my shorty.  For a $100 I don't know if you will find much.  I, personally, buy the best I can find, it is your brain bucket after all.

I just got a Shoei X12 (not $100)... the pads inside are removable, and they have different sizes...
I got a set of smaller cheek pads to relieve cheek-squash... seems good, haven't ridden with it yet.

The real answer is to go back to the shop and try all of them on until you find one that
doesn't squash your cheeks... whatever you pay, it will be a waste of money if you
don't use it...

When I bought my Harley in 98, I couldn't find a helmet at the Harley shop that was comfortable,
so I rode over to the Honda shop and found one. Dang... if I had only gone to the Honda shop
for the motorcycle I could have saved a lot of trouble, and met a bunch of you guys a lot
sooner  Wink ...

It's been my experience that well known brands all meet the Dot and sometimes Snell spec.  As you go pricier, better comfort, better fit, better quality.  I have Nolans, one open face and one modular. I like both.  The fit on helmets vary especially in the chin area for full face.  Basically you get what you pay for. Around town, probably a cheap one.  Trips,  a higher price (quality) would be a better choice.

I agree on you get what you pay for  $100? The modular helmets are all noiseyier than a full face and are heavier more hardware and extra seems add to weight and noise. I perfer a full face and pack a half lid in a saddle  bag if  i am gonna be town a long time and gets too hot.

Mike's got the best answer..... even if you don't pay "store" prices, you need to go to some and try them on till you get what you like.  Having found the model and size you like.... shop all over for best price. (helmets, boots and gloves have to be tried on, the rest I can buy on-line without trying.)

And don't let the sales person tell you it's OK for your head to be squeezed and that the foam will soften up later...... or better yet, the helmet's loose, but "you'll grow into it."  In fact, I usually tell sales people to leave me alone.

Researching on-line, especially for rider reviews, is not a waste of time.  But you have to try them on.  Among my 8-9 helmets, I have medium thru extra large..... and my head stopped growing a while back. (Belts and pants are another matter entirely).

I have a Fulmer Modular Flip up.

Love it, and it no squeeze da cheeks together.

I had a open face Fulmer for about 23 years and it never rotten out the interior till this year.    It just flat got hard and jabbed ya so I retired it.      It was nice in the Trike when I was required to wear a helmet.

I have tried modular helmets with not much luck.  Just too much happening in the air stream when the helmets "up."  I do have helmets like golf clubs for all occasions.

I wish I could find an old "Bell" full face, like I wore back in the 70's.  Although it was heavy, the Bell was the most solid helmet ever.

I feel like the modern helmets made of plastic with all the air vents don't offer nearly the protection of the old school fiberglass ones.

I wear scorpion helmets. Comfortable and have decent prices. Got mine on sale, its a full face exo700 and paid just over 100 for it. It has a kevlar core and is the quietest helmet i have ever worn.

Thanks guys for all your help. Solo you are so right, you get what you pay for!
Mike the Honda store i was refering to was Foothills. I was in there last year looking for helmets and tried on a full face that was just too tight- like a vice and the guy said that's the way they are supposed to fit! I know they are supposed to be a little snug but not painfully tight! I haven't been there lately but it seemed the majority of them were HJC which is a good one but not much selection. Maybe I'll try Cycle Gear. Nolan, Fulmer, Bell and they are so many good ones on the  market.

Fudd I'm with you , I am old school and these space age Jetson Dars Vader helmet will take some getting used to! Lol

Mike I'd like to have a Shoei, Schuberth, Arai, Shark, Ruby, etc.  but just can't justify the cost. I feel if there is a direct hit to the head at speed, any helmet won't save ya and will also break your neck. That very thing happened to a friend that hit a tree head on and killed him. Helmet was busted all to pieces and he broke his neck-DOA.

Blackdog, here is a link for the Bell. I can get it for $109!! I just hope I can find one around here.
