Being in Canada, I take mine out each winter and put it in a heated garage and charge it every couple of months but the batteries only seem to last 3 or 4 years and then I have to get another one. I find that it does not make a difference what battery you use. I currently have a Yuasa that I purchased in Nashville TN when my other battery crapped out on me when I was down there a few years ago. Next year will be the 4th year and I half expect it to die on me part way through the summer. I have been eying the Odyssey battery sold by Total Battery. It is supposed to be a military quality battery that lasts a minimum of 9 years. It is not cheap though, about $180.

Replaced batteries on 2 Valks a couple of years ago (10 year marker). Both batteries were still strong but thought I would do some preventive maintenance as these batteries are known to go without any warning signs.
My opinion - this is the longest battery I have ever had in any toy i owned so bought another original.
bought from honda directline (i think that is the name) - they shipped the battery with a little acid packet. Very neat / easy to install acid pack.
good luck

I bought a AGM battery when I bought the bike 6 years ago. I have a tender for it, but I never think of putting it on to charge for the winter. It has never failed to start the bike, even in the cold winter. YMMV

there are some new gel batteries out now that are amazing..a friend has one that is smaller than a bike battery and it can be mounted anyway but upside down and he has them on 500+ cube high compression motors, flathead V8's, etc...never had a problem starting any of those rigs...and they are coming out with them for bikes as well... When mine goes south, I'll be looking into one of those..

I have a smart charger made by CTEK. I have the 3300 model. There's a cheaper one too (800 model). I love it. You can leave it on the battery 100% of the time without overcharging problems. Search on Amazon for the best prices.

I just replaced the original Yuasa battery in my 2003 with one from Amazon.com. $69.05 & free shipping. Came with an easy to install acid pack. Same Yuasa p/n as the original. I've always used a battery tender.

I got 2 of the same model battery maintainer. 1 for the bike and 1 for the Chevy Trike. Plug them in, in the winter, take em off in the spring. Both units spin over like it was a new battery in the spring.

Not to mention that many more months (years) of high level operation should be the benefit of employing a battery minder when the bike is going to be inactive for any length of time.

I tend to disagree. The Yuasa battery holds up better than any other lead-acid type in my experence.

With the Yuasa battery being made in Japan and now also China, it is a toss up as to how they compare to each other; although there have been some internet comments about the China Yuasa batteries not being of the same level of quality as the Japanese Yuasa.
Any more when a battery is needed I would suggest to get one from WalMart. They are either one year guarantee or two year guarantee.
The big thing about a new battery is if you are actually getting a new battery.
If you get a battery that just came off a shelf and supposedly "ready to go", you have no idea of how long it has been sitting there "wet" and going through it's normal out of use discharge. Not only that, but you have no idea if it has been properly prepared prior to being put on the shelf.
That's why I say WalMart. The battery you get from there will have the acid in a separate pack that you have to add to the battery. Read the directions on the battery. The instructions are clearly written and after following the directions you will have the freshest "ready to go" battery possible.
Not only that, if there is a problem and problems do occur, it is a very easy deal to go back and get a new battery in exchange.
I'd also suggest to get a single year battery. I don't think there is a much difference between the one year and two year battery. I feel this has just been a marketing ploy developed from the automobile aftermarket industry, and I am very confident that you will receive many more years out of a WalMart battery than what you might expect. What do you think Yuasa guarantees for their batteries?
The most important thing to do is to follow the directions on the new battery before deployment.

Do they make a sealed battery that can be used on our Valks? Are there any advantages to such a battery?

I just bought a battery for a gravely tractor from Walmart. It wasn't sealed or AGM and it came wet. It did however have a date sticker, Month and year. I charged it before putting a load on it; it didn't need much. The battery manufacturer is Johnson Controls which is a US company but that doesn't mean it was made here. It was 26.99 but no it won't fit a valk.

My Yuasa box says MFG#M3RH4S Made in the USA. The MSDS says Made in the Laureldale, PA. Like anything, I'm sure the parts can come from anywhere. Don't mean to start an argument or anything -just saying.

I only use AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries in any of my bikes. They are totally sealed, never need water, are smaller than any corresponding Lead Acid battery, typically have higher CCA (Cold Cranking Amps), can be mounted in any position, won't sulfite, and are priced reasonably by comparison. Deka (East Penn Mfg.) is a large US based, and US made battery manufacturer that makes many different types of batteries. Their AGM batteries are all of the things I have said above. Google them, you won't be dissapointed.

I recently bought a battery for my 1994 Goldwing GL1500SE. These bikes, for whatever reason, need a good, strong battery to crank over the motor, so I looked for one with a high CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating. I bought a Mighty Max battery off of eBay with a 330 CCA rating. I am really pleased with the battery and it cranks over the bike faster than it has ever cranked. And it starts easier, too! Not bike related but I also had a APC brand computer battery backup that needed a battery, so I bought a Mighty Max battery for it as well. Both batteries fit perfectly. The price was reasonable so you might consider one of these batteries. Just my two cents worth. Be safe, everyone.

This is the same battery I have in both of mine. It’s what my local parts guy sells and I’ve been happy with them. The oldest is just over 4 years and seems to act like new. I don’t need a tender, Florida life has a 98% riding season.
