I'm trying to remove the carbs from my '97.  The only thing left is the "upper radiator hose plastic shroud" is in the way and I can't get it out - it's stuck in.  The manual says it's got to be removed for clearance.  Any idea how to get it out?  I don't see any screws or bolts attaching it to the bike.

It's been such a long time since I've done mine ... that I have forgotten.  Lips Sealed

However I vaguely remember loosening the radiator in the front of it. Does it seem to be catching in the radiator fan, etc?

I do not remove the air deflector when removing the carb.

But I do remove the rear upper engine hangers and the carb to head manifolds.

Carbs come right out the left side.

+1 on the hangers, I never remove the shroud.
I leave the 3 manifolds on the head on the opposite side I am removing the carbs from.
I ususlly take them out the right side, either way they come out easy.

I remove both but easy enough to try to remove the carbs then remove hanger as needed.
No need to support the engine.
Remember to cover the inlet ports while you have the carbs off, don't need anything dropping into the cylinders.

Do I need to remove BOTH hangers?  Do I need to support the engine from below when I remove them?

I find it easier to remove the left one. On the right one leave the switch attached, remove the bolts and push it to the rear.
