A driver started the bus. Did her pre check and then left the bus warming up whilst she parked her car. Came back to find the bus on fire. About 4 minutes later and after the fire was put out here's the result. Batteries It looked like a normal vehicle fire from the outside. THEN I opened the back door and looked inside. That's why we practice fire evacuation EVERY semester with the kids. Gave me chills looking inside. That's paint from the ceiling hanging down over the side window Looking down the bus from the back door Drivers seat

No wonder they don't have seat belts.... if they start on fire you sure as hell want to get out quickly and without having to worry about a belt.
What was the cause of the fire?

Just imagine that in a flying tube. But that's not why they don't have seat belts.
Meltinated the radiator huh? That's a pretty hot fire.

Don't know cause.
As to seat belts.
Imagine trying to get 60+ elementary kids of all different ages and sizes buckled up safely at ONE STOP whilst all the traffic is held up waiting for the red loading lights to go off.
THEN
The same scenario with 40 high school kids at one stop.
That's an everyday atypical load at apartment complexes across the country.

I wouldn't drive a school bus unless 6 point harnesses and ball gags were required equipment.

Britman: We have diesel pushers in our fleet. A couple of months ago an older bus caught fire with 30 kids on board going down the road. The 27 yr old female driver got them all off the bus safely. She doesn't have much seniority but now she drives a new bus as a reward.

I'm assuming the jack under the front end is part of the fire investigation...no?

The jack is there because the tires are no longer serviceable. As well as the the motor mounts melted and the engine dropped breaking off the drive shaft. I'm guessing the bus is a scrapper???

One of the classes I took as a mechanic was FAMPS ( failure analysis maintenance procedures) We would diagnose mechanical , electrical failures and accidents. Mind you now, I haven't been involved in this in a lot of years. My best shot is an electrical failure near the starter that caused the wiring and dash to catch fire. The batteries were secondary and then melted down because of the fire. Electrical fires generate extreme heat until it hits flash point, then it is like a fire bomb. The flames just erupt and usually ignite the gas generated by the insulation.
