When I sit down on my bike, my first reach is behind me to grab my helmet off of the back seat rest. When I cut my bike off, my first action is to pull my helmet off and hang it in its spot. I always keep my visor closed, helmet shut, with the helmet down over the back rest. It stays as dry as it is going to stay. Usually it stays put.

My missing helmet seems to indicate that someone stole my helmet.

After a long day of work I made it to my bike and realized my helmet was not where I left it. That ruined an already slightly crappy Wednesday.

I guess I'm going to need to figure out a helmet lock.

I would really like the helmet to stay with the bike. I would also like for the helmet to be as upright as possible while attached to the bike. My wife brought me my old helmet so I could ride home. I'm still wearing the wore out helmet. Soon I'll be placing an order for a new helmet. I suppose I should order a lock at the same time. Any suggestions.

The one under the seat is better than nothing or look for the type that bolts on the clutch lever mount.

Really sorry to read your helmet was taken. Hopefully someone at work may know something and let you know what really happened. On my Valkyrie I usually just hang mine on the right mirror. On my Guzzi I typically hang in off the right foot peg. If you wear a full face, a simple cable lock would work well. The cable lock might also work on an open face by attaching to the D ring.

All the best to you with a replacement helmet and a lock,

Not a cheap option, but perhaps a lockable trunk?

Seeing as you put the helmet over the back rest, I'd imaging you have a standard or tourer?

How about a helmet lock attached to the mounting bracket of the back rest somehow??

Then you wouldn't have to change when & where you put your helmet... just add an extra step to engage/disengage the lock, IF your in a place where you'd want it locked.

It's just a suggestion though... it may not look right with a lock on the bracket.

We made a beer run several years ago after a long day ride before hitting a motel. A couple who was two-up on a Harley came out while we was parking and someone stole both their helmets while they was in the store  Sad  This could ruin a nice weekend road trip when out of town or state with all the helmet laws we have in the south. Two new helmets can get deep in the pocket.

My son lost 3 helmets before he woke up.

He rides a Texas Chopper, Hardley look alike, 103" S&S, I think that is right brand of engine.    Bike is made somewhere down South, engines come out of Wisconsin.

He bought a 13 or 14" cable from J&P Cycle that he puts through or over his chin guard and fastens it to the right shock mount, with it setting on the buddy seat.   That way it is in the same position of yours and no water can get in it when parked.    You could also do the same thing only use the luggage rack for the connection point.

To whoever stole your helmet.

I hope all their children are born naked.

I have worried about this same scenerio.

Helmet lock would be prudent.

And maybe throw a small skid lid(NON DOT) helmet in storage on the bike to get you home.

I like the cable idea, small but strong. And to the ahole who swiped your lid, he is a big ahole.

I just use a padlock and secure mine to the backrest.  Store the lock in my tank pouch.

I have purchased some new handguns lately.....they come with a totally useless (for guns) lock that has a long cable that you are supposed to stick through the barrel...NOT ME.......well I keep one on the bike, it makes a great helmet lock......goes through the "D" rings and around the sissy bar and locks perfect and cheap.......I think I could find an extra one around the house if you want it

this is what i use on the valk because of the pretty much useless position of the onboard underseat lock.  i just loop it around the schock with the helmet on the seat.  it works for jackets, too.
i always lock my helmet unless i'm within visual and running after someone distance.  shoei's aren't cheaply replaced.

Not as secure as a lock, but what I do is put the helmet on the sissy bar then fasten in through the sissy bar as if the pad on the sissy bar was wearing it.

Obviously it won't stop a determined thief, but really nothing will. It will, however, discourage a casual thief that's looking for a quick and easy steal. If they have to stop and fiddle with it, it greatly increases the chances of them being caught, and encourages them to move on.

(That, and without actually looking under the helmet, the casual thief wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a locked helmet and one that's just fastened in place.)

I have one of these on the end of one Kuryakyn ISO grip.  (Though more often than not, if I think there is a chance some dipstick might take my helmet, I take it with me)

I've used the clutch lever pin for years. It doesn't rain much out here but if you need that protection, get a small waterproof bag from a hiking/camping store. Maybe a plastic grocery bag tied on each day would also work. Good lord, we all have too many of them around the kitchen.

I actually leave mine on the seat or on top of the tank just under tha handle bars... leave it there all the time... BUT......My helmet has dings, scratches and other abuse and looks like S*^t ....built in deterrent (I dont THINK it smells?!?!)  Pretty sure its safe and I don't have to look at it when I'm wearing it anyway.....Its all broke in and comfy and now that I hear about what happens to nice ones, I think I'l hang onto it. I hope you gave the SOB head lice.

Seriously, I have a self-coiling "bicycle lock" that stays neatly out of the way on the side of my sissy bar.  It was about $5 at Walyworld.  The end is just small enough to thread through the metal loops on a helmet fastener.  Although it has a 4 digit lock code, I just set the last pin, two clicks the same way each time to lock it.  That way I can open it, even in the dark, without a light or glasses.

75% of the time I park in safe areas and don't need it.  However, all of my helmets have communication and music electronics in them.  I don't want some jackass thinking they would make cool walkie-talkies.  I'd rather lose them than pack them around in a store, so this is a great option for me.

I don't normally lock my helmet, but when I feel the need I lock the D rings under the saddlebag lid (I have a tourer) and lock the lid.

The PO included a cheap padlock with a long shackle when I got bike.  It would work fine to attach to mirror or to support for sissy bar, except in 1 1/2 years I have never used it.  I use your technique.  Undecided

Buy a small cable lock. They make them all kinds of lengths. You can also find them at bicycle shops. Don't need to be too substantial, since the weakest link is still the helmet strap, unless you use a full face and put it through the chin guard. I've even seen those straps at Wal Mart, in the bicycle section.

I've not bought any guns, so I'm not quite sure I know what you're describing. I do like the idea that it sounds long enough without being to long, and in my mind is strong and light with a decently easy to use key. That might be a winner.

I did find out that when I carry my helmet into my office, like I started doing yesterday, the helmet will sit on top of my coat rack. I expected the weight of the coat and helmet would topple it. That was nice.

I'm using the helmet that saved my life. I'm glad I kept it for spare parts, but it'll only do until I can get the new helmet in.

The new helmet needs a lock. I've carried my helmets unlocked since 1998, but I guess all things change.

Not as secure as a lock, but what I do is put the helmet on the sissy bar then fasten in through the sissy bar as if the pad on the sissy bar was wearing it.

I did something similar at a few bike rallies. That is a neat non-lock trick.

I think I like the look of the lock ChrisjCMA recommends. It's smaller than some but big enough to do the job.

Of course, I'll have to install a D ring substitute since the Nolan N-1oo doesn't have  a D-ring. I can figure that out with an old key ring ring.

I wouldn't buy a "used" helmet ....  you don't know what's it been thru or had in it.  Almost like getting used underwear (panties are different tho...   Grin).

I like the idea of the gun lock use tho... great idea.   I have kept my helmet on the rear seat when parked and never had it stolen or messed with that I know of.

Well, I have a 500 dollar helmet. There's a reason to steal one right there. I won't even trust it to a helmet lock.

Bicycle cable lock is another great idea, especially for locking up a coat as well.... but I have locking hard bags for that.... but that is a wonderful idea for those without hard bags and a coat/helmet to lock up.  Locks only keep honest people honest.... for the most part.... thieves will find a way to get around a lock if they really want something.

I didn't say a gun cable lock is useless.... but my gun safe is much better, and frees up those gun locks to be used for helmet locks or a boat anchor (used collectively of course) if needed.  Other guns out of the safe are in locations that I don't want them to have a lock.   I don't own a $500 helmet... but I do have 2 modular full face helmets which are basically new/hardly used (foul weather use when needed), and 2  other half helmets that are used mainly.

It's not my first choice either for securing a gun but I used to keep my shotgun in my Jeep locked to the seat frame with a cable gun lock. Worked very well for that.

I like the idea of the gun lock because I can still keep my helmet on my tourer back rest. I can keep the helmet up right and closed to keep the rain out. I do hate putting on a helmet that has already sucked in water before I ride.

I like the one ChrisJ showed. So I headed to my local Shooter's Express. I don't go in there much. It was a hopping place on a Friday evening.

I had to search for a while to find a similar lock. The only one I found had no price. So, I asked the clerk. He asked the manager. The manager said to just give it to me. So, I came out with a free lock. Not a bad day.

I want to get in the habit of locking my helmet down while I'm still ticked my last helmet was stolen.

So far this seems like the best answer.

Thanks for all of the replies and all of the options.

Now that seems like a good deal to me!!  though what a pain to "lock up" after so many times of just throwing helmet on the back. Would like to do the same, but i think i will just continue to throw it on the back until I get ripped off also.
