Does it really sound that bad ???

I've been looking to replace my aftermarkets with stock but absolutely will not buy a set that has been mutilated in any way. Why do people do this ???   Sad

I was told on my last trip to Sturgis that my I/S, even with Cobras, sounded like a sewing machine on steroids....those are fighting words!   tickedoff

I like the stocks just as they are, except the exhaust extensions, I prefer the I/S extensions. With Tourers the ext. are hidden by the bags, so on with I/S ext. Doesn't sound like a sewing machine to me, just gutty and ready to go.

I agree with leaving them alone...I have a set of MarkT glaspaks but I also have a new, unaltered set (with 6 miles on them) in storage.

I think it's just a way to do something to the bike that doesn't cost anything.  Completely stock pipes will become rare...and should hold their value in the future.

I love my molested pipes!   Roll Eyes    I cut the piggies to where they were straight and then drilled out the rear baffles only.  I also have the 18" Airflo slash cut exhaust tips (facing down).  I love the sound and it's a huge IMPROVEMENT over the stock sound.

Not only were the pipes on my bike ratty, dented and rusty when I got it, but the piggies were cut and the
baffles were drilled. I considered the bike unrideable, it was awful.

I wear a full face helmet, which probably collects a lot of the sound... helmet choice might be part
of why there are a lot of different opinions about chopping up OEM exhausts...

For a while I had Interstate exhausts, now I have Tourer/std exhausts with Honda triple-tips... Interstate exhausts
are noticeably quieter...

No pipe molestation here, I like relatively quiet.  And I bet a large percentage of Valk riders also remain stock.... though they may not be routine posters here.

I rode a LOUD hog for 18 years before the valk, and got that foolishness out of my system.  To each their own.

My 2d IS had the piggies removed, and that is OK, but I would not want any more noise than that.

The original Valk exhaust was louder than my '92 GW.

I only cut the piggies on my Valk and added different exhaust tips.  Just right for me.

IMO, Cobras with the baffles out sound like a two bit worn out car with a rusted muffler.    I rode behind a Valk with Cobras at the CBR. Drove me nuts.

I like a deep mellow sound about 10 db louder than stock.  Cobras ain't it

However, to each his own.

My name is Czuch and I cut the piggies.
I like the rumbly sound when were accelerating ,then it shuts up and I have quiet helmet time.

I had way too many sets of exhaust on MGM from 97 to about 2002. Started with stock, cut em up and added glass packs.   Didn't like them so I bought a set of MarkT's replaceable paks with AirFlow turn downs.   From there to 6X6 Cobras, with baffle and without, bought a set of Jardine's, sounded good at the start but blew out real quick, well time wise, but many many miles worth, then I got a set of SuperTrapps, back to stock, cut piggies, drilled BOTH baffles and was not happy, so I bought a set of Vikings.

Thanks to Justin and Andy for these pipes.   Still got them and they still look like new.

Mom even likes the Vikings......    That is a feather in my hat.

My bike came with after market pipes. I think there Jardine. They make the bike sound like a sports car when I rev it up at a light. When I'm out riding for the day though, I would prefer the bike to be quieter.
If i could afford it, I'd buy a stock set and swap them out.

My previous bike was an 88 1500 Wing.  I added Jardine pipes and a Basani X-tractor.  It was a loud Wing uglystupid2  I thought the bike needed a little character adjustment and that did it along with a trigger wheel and rejetting the carbs.

I searched for a long time to find an unmolested/virgin IS and I found it.  The Valk is much quieter than the Wing was and I like it that way.

I am a member of the ranks of riders who don't want loud pipes.

Call it the "Silent Majority."  Pun intended.

I'm more into "Sneaking Sally through the alley," than waking the dead.

After days of 500 or more miles in the saddle, I don't want to hear them in my head all night while I trying to sleep.

If I did want something louder, I'd buy after-market pipes.  I wouldn't butcher my stock ones.

I really don't like loud, On my I/S I  took a 1 inch strip of stanless steel and welded it accross the underside of my piggies, about 1 inch in ( it really cuts down on them vibrating) and then I stuffed the area around the piggies with glassmat. QUIET.....

Why? well we're all different, obvioiusly not everone does.   Smiley

My reasoning....After dressing up my bike to my liking I wanted it to sound like it looked.  In my opinion that is a mellow toned 6.  Not a Harley, because it is not, my thinking is that if you want your bike to sound like a Harley, buy one.

So it just so happens that I replaced mine two weeks ago.  I had drilled out (two baffles) on my last set and found this to be perfect in terms of sound. The exception was with distance rides, hear sound became wearing.  Still I would not have replaced them if they'd not been damaged in my last accident.

I had kept a spare set for some time and decided to go with the Mark T's with cross over, bones, and silencers.  They've been on two week now and here's what I'm seeing and feeling.

  • Excellent craftsmanship
  • Bones are cool idea but to loud for anything but bar hoping.  (These things scream above 3K RPM's)
  • Glasspacks with silencer are right on the money, (for my liking).  Nice tone all the way around.
  • To early to tell..but with my last two tanks I've picked up 3 additional miles per gallon.  cooldude

Cause loud pipes save lives. Wink

Cause I'm young. Well was. Mid 20's when I bought it. Mid 30's now. Back then I wasnt going to fork over $1000 for a set of pipes. Still aint. Had mine cut and drilled for years. 2 years ago I cut off 4" off the entire thing. Louder now. No road noise change between the cut and oem sound. Ears still hum after a 400-500 mile day.

'Cause at 60,000 miles or so the LH stock exhaust developed an annoying rattle inside the can. Started rippin' them apart & after reading the Tech section of this forum I decided to give the glasspack route a try.
Came up with this set up.

Worked out real nice but after a couple years we started to take longer trips & the droning started to get to me.
So I added extensions to get the noise out of the tips.

Success!  cooldude Sounds great & not much louder than stock.

Kim's '98 came with stockers & a nice set of Cobras. She did not like the quiet stockers so on went the Cobras. Momma's happy now & that's all that matters!  Shocked

BTW, still have her stockers in the storage room just in case.

Bought the '99 with un-baffled Cobras already on, UHHH...NO. PO gave me some non-Cobra baffles which I promptly reinstalled. Sounded like $%^&*#. Angry   So I wrapped the baffles with packing. Sounds like $%^&*# only mellow-er now.  Roll Eyes Anyhow, I have an extra set of decent but not great stockers that I want to either glasspack out or try some other method of making a custom system. I like to experiment so we'll see what comes up.

My bottom line, stockers too quiet, most aftermarket too loud so I'll get busy mutilating stock exhausts until I get what I want.
Aint that what motorcycling is all about?? Doin' your own thing?  Cool

Smokin Joe said it ALL!
"Ragnar" cut with factory I/S tips (& I only wear my "hawk" helmet or DOT half shell, so no drone).
Tried 2" cut on piggies.
Cut piggies off.
Bored rear baffles 3/4".
Tried turn down tips.
Tried turn out tips.
Said to 4377 with it and removed (Ragnar'd) rear baffles.
Eureka............ that's the sound I was lookin' for!
If I made another pipe mod it would be unbaffled cobra's. Loud pipes DO save lives. (This from someone who's daily driver is still a 77 754 with open kerker & chrome auto tip.) Just don't like the way single wall cobra's blue.
My 2ct's. Peace, Whiskey.

I really like the sound of most all after market and modified factory exhausts. Over the years I have acquired a set of TBR 6x6's and 2 sets of uncut, non-drilled stock systems and yet I still have my origonal uncut 10 year old pipes on my bike. Maybe this winter i'll stick the TBR's on and see what I think. I would like to have a set of glass-pac modified pipes but who knows when I would ever get around to using them!
