Hey all. I am looking at replacing my front with an Avon Cobra. http://www.bikebandit.com/avon-av71-cobra-motorcycle-tire <-- has two different 150/80 r17 One H rated with 72 load index. One V rated without a list load index. I am told that the Avon catalog states the H rated one is for the valk. SO my question - does it matter? One would think I would rather have the higher speed rating (and cheaper) tire.

H is rated for 130MPH, V rated to 149MPH. Either should be good for the Valk. I saw my speedo at 135MPH once, scared the crap out of me. H is good enough for most riding. Unless someone else has info on handling or sidewall stiffness (?) go for the cheap. Just sayin'. Fred

I have the H-rated on mine. I don't plan on doing in excess of 130 mph sustained for any amount of time. I don't think the heat buildup at that speed will be an issue.

I went through the same thought process, but found out that the H rated has stiffer sidewalls and higher weight rating. I really like these tires and have had them on my I/S for the last three tire changes. I keep them between 43-45psi and get 15k out of them, with no cupping until their almost warn out. I also noticed that the cupping was really reduced after I installed Progressive fork springs.

Yep. Cobras seem to last longer. I run mine at 40PSI and get around 15,000 out of them. Venoms might have been a little stickyer but it's hard to say for sure.

Just mounted the Cobra H rated on mine. Switched from the E3 and the avon is extremely better. Didn't think I would notice a huge change but to my pleasant surprise I have. P.S. 130+ hasn't been an issue.

I saw in online tire info that even the h rated 130 mile per hour tires are tested up to 200 mph

ARGGGGGG. Just got back from the dealer. Took the removed wheel and tire to him. He refused to install it for "liability" reasons as I did not buy it from him. He is correct. He wanted 300 for the tire alone. I got it online for 170.
The other honda dealer in town refused to pass my bikes yearly require state inspection as I had a car tire on the back and that makes it unsafe. (only state speculation on the tires is tread depth) I asked him if he failed the trikes or can-ams and they said that was different.
I hate dealers. Sorry. Just needed to vent. Guess I will have to start making calls on monday to find someone to install this tire. Anyone know of someone in the Asheville NC area?

Try quad shops. They will put any tire on any rim. That's where I got the CT installed. Fred.

I'm not sure about those specific numbers but there is a pretty wide margin of speed safety built in.

When I was searching dealers to have my CT mounted I had a hard time. I finally just called firestone and told them I was mounting the CT on a motorcycle rim for my tow behind trailer. Manager just made sure I wasn't putting it on my motorcycle itself and installed it for $15.

Dumb question. How the hell do you get your Valks uo to 130+ mph? Redline it in 4th and shift to 5th. No troulble getting to 120 quick but like pulling teeth to get much more. No timing wheel mods.

I got my IS up there, without noticing; passing 6 or 7 vehicles (semi, pickups, cars, Winnebago) riding thru Saskatchewan two summers ago. Just looked, cranked it from 65 in 5th and went. Looked down when I got back into my lane, 135 MPH! Scared the crap out of me, but she was actually still accelerating...
99 IS, California bike, 18K miles, regular gas, all stock with E3's on her.
Unless you're running a 205/55 or smaller rear tire, yours should do the same. Fred.

I dunno what it is with my Valk but compared to a couple others that I ride with mine is a bit faster. I have the Cobra 6+6, Jet kit, and a K&N filter. That's it. Run full synthetic oil, change the plugs too soon every time cause it's cheap, run 87 Octane. I figured going dark side would have somewhat of a negative impact on speed if any but I can't tell a difference. That being said I can get it up to 130 without any problem. Down the steep bridge near me it'll pass the 140-145 mark pretty quickly. (Maybe more but I don't spend to much time staring at the speedo at them speeds). Maybe knowing this is why I never get over 25 MPG...
