Way to go car driver, leave the rider to his doom.
Rider should have had more sense than to "zoom up" on Mum and calf.

. ....not sure who that is Dag. ...but this is the shot Chili took of a big ol "mom" ...who suddenly came out of the treeline on our right with a calf in tow...when we first cruised out of "The Needles" and into Custer State Park... ...and this is a shot some friends of ours took of us making a quick get away ...down the wrong side of the road after she suddenly charged...I had just told Chili to get a pic of her which is the first shot...all you could here after that was Chili going...Go ! ...Go !! ... GOOOOO !!!! ..

I wsa stuck in a traffic back up in Yellowstone. Tourist gawpers.
I was behind an Olds Cutlass when a BIG bull came out of the tree behind me and to my left. He made a hard left and thumped up the centre line towards me. One has no idea how big these beasties are until you are up close to one.
They are frickin HUGE. As he approacehd the back of the Valk I manged to squeeze the bike with my thighs and reduced its width to that of an envelope. This envelope I inserted up right side of the Cutlass between it and the grass verge.
I had my canera on a lanyard around my neck but the thought of taking a photo never crossed my mind. I was too busy trying to shrink myself as much as possible.

. . ...." One has no idea how big these beasties are until you are up close to one. " .. .. . . ...exactly...you see that thick underbrush on the right side of the road...she suddenly appeared out of there with her calf in tow...she was as big as a Volkswagon....when I glanced back momentarily, all I saw was that giant eye staring back at me....just something about her demeanor told me that something was up and I had a feeling she was about to charge...Chili had just taken that shot when she abruptly came at us...but it was only half hearted....think she was just giving us a little message....Get away from my baby ! . ....I still didnt take any chances though.....*tweeked* the throttle and we were out of danger in the blink of an eye...I was laughing at Chili freeking out in that pic as we zoomed down the wrong side of the road..

We have a local wildlife perserve here in St. Louis that has a small buffalo herd. First time I rode through it (on the bike no less...didn't see the signs not to ride in...), I had an encounter with a young bull. I don't know if it was the noise of the motor or the fact that he could see me (as opposed to just seeing my head), but he ran at me. Luckily...he was a ways off and I had room to manuever. Hide behind a car...then a tree...then zooming off up a hill. They are surprisingly fast...on the charge...but he didn't stand a chance in hell as I took off up the hill. While I have been back in the park...I have not gone back in on my bike...and won't.
A few years ago, I went to Yellowstone with a group of friends. I don't remember anything like this happening with the buffalo we saw out there.

I travel through the Wichita Wildlife Refuge quite regularly when going anywhere west of the house and sometimes I just take a leasurly drive through the place. There are a lot of buffalo there and I took these pictures while stopped talking to my son, Mark, both engines turned off. This big bull came within 5 yards of both bikes and seemed to pay little attention to us...Jim
