Having a smoking section in a public building is like having a peeing section in a public pool.

I smoked 4 packs a day until March 1, 2001. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.

I regret all the people I harmed with my second hand smoke over 30 years. I'm glad society is waking up to the fact that people like me were hurting other people who didn't have any say in the matter.

I'm still grateful for our smokers. They pay HUGE taxes that help keep my taxes lower. They are literally killing themselves so I can pay less...and I certainly do appreciate it. I just don't want to be around them while they do it.

I'm sure for most of those years you never heard of second hand smoke. I doesn't seem like it's been that long ago and then they started passing laws. But I noticed how time flies the older ya get!

Again, not everyone reacts in the same manner. My mother smoked three packs a day until I was 13. I have moderate to severe (depending on the time of year) respiratory issues and I think that had a lot to do with it and why I react to cigarette smoke the way I do. It's very easy for someone who sucks on paper d**ks and likes it to dismiss other people's reaction to it "crap".

Alot of the girls ask Kit if she wants to go out and smoke. I set by myself while she goes. Gosh I wished I smoked.  2funny She is always gone 20 min to. Wonder whats going on out there.  ???  Smiley

But I'm not telling YOU what do do. I'm just pointing out that second hand smoke is a very real irritant and also a real hazard, especially to developing lungs.

Not too long ago, here, they banned smoking in prisons. I could always try getting busted for something, and voi-frikkin'-la! Cheap and effective quit program.

I'm not saying definately for sure, but, my wife has bad bronchitis almost yearly. I've had pnuemonia twice and it seems respritory issues abound for both of us. we don't smoke, both our parents did.

I also tend to avoid places where smoking is allowed, even if all second hand smoke data is crap I don't want to smell like a butt can. I don't give people the stink eye, if it's allowed go ahead I just won't hang around.

Well it's kinda like when I pass a collection of smokers huddled in a doorway. Usually outdoors the concentration of smoke isn't enough to make me stop breathing* but it's offensive. Like passing some foul smelling chemical pile. But it's an annoyance at that point so I don't care. Life is full of little annoyances so I just deal with it. But there are some people who would use that as ammo to clamp down (I'm looking at YOU mayor Bloomberg).

* The only way I can describe what happens when I encounter higher concentration is that breathing ceases to be sympathetic and I have to mentally FORCE myself to take in air and even then it's halting and labored.

In Manhattan KS ,City law states that business can not place, nor maintain ashtrays on the property. All commercial vehicles with in the city must have posted non smoking signs visible to the exterior and that included my personal work truck because it was owned and titled to my business even tho' I'm the only employee !

Seems like yesterday when we shifted to no smoking in offices. We struggled with it for a while but things got sorted out eventually. Most of my smokes were 2-3 minutes max - especially in the winter. I also never took the 'scheduled' breaks. Evened out in the long run.
One of the first to complain about "smokers being gone a lot" was this ("Richard") I worked with. Non-smoker. However: each and every morning, like clockwork, and NOT during breaks, he'd pull the Al Bundy: roll up the morning paper, smack it under his arm, and depart for the crapper. Invariably 30-40 minutes.
Productivity? Whatever. But he didn't sneak off for a smoke.  tickedoff

Well yeah but that's an essential bodily function. And of course it helps if you know who won the game last night.  Wink

Back to the original subject,
Here in Wisconsin, last year, imposed a no smoking ordinance in restaurants and bars, many thought they'd go out of business, but none did.  now, you can't smoke in any public building, that includes businesses that do not serve the public, example; manufacturing, service shops, etcetera.  you can smoke in your home, car, or where ever, just so long as you're 25' from the door.

back to the "Al Bundy" thing posted earlier!
i use to work with a guy that would take 5 additional smoke breaks during the day, each one lasted 5 minutes minimum, along with the regular 2 15minute brakes, and the 1/2 hour lunch.  so this guy was getting 1 hour 25 minutes of every day to himself to smoke while everyone else got only one hour break time.  so, being the smart ass that i am, when ever he would go out for a smoke, i'd pull out a magazine, sit back and read it, until he got back.  of course this ticked him off, so he started smoking with the supervisors!!  guess who got fired.....  it’s okay though, I now have a job that pays $6 more per hour then he does, and that really ticks him off!!  Grin  now, i work with guys that smoke all the time, don't care either 'cause i take just as many breaks as they do, and they don't get pissed.

It would be entirely fair to pay a smoker employee 10% less than the rest.
Smokers, as a group, also use more sick leave and health insurance benefits than a non-smoker.
