Close as in touching.   Angry

It's about 4:30 Saturday afternoon, NB Coit at 121, right track of leftmost of three lanes.  It goes to five lanes at the intersection with a dedicated right turn lane and a newly formed left lane set up for the light past 121.  I'm approaching the intersection and slowing to 15-20 not to have to brake for the new green light and the traffic getting going and all of a sudden I have something in my left peripheral and the sound of a PowerStroke and I'm thinking DAMN, he's close, and then the "courtesy tap" on my left shoulder and the THWAP of his RH mirror on my LH mirror, then the bars wiggle, and he has completely passed me!  IN MY LANE!?!?!?  WTF???

Is my bike school bus yellow?  Do I have lots of lights going on in back?  Is my riding jacket black and yellow?  Was is broad daylight?  If it had been a dually, I would have been in trouble.

I gave him a very healthy dose of Big BF Quad Horn, followed him through the intersection to the next one, followed him through his left turn and motioned him into the 7-11.  Thankfully, a really nice lady followed me having seen the entire episode unfold.

Yeah, I'm OK.  So's the bike after using the factory tool kit's 17mm wrench to bring the mirror back 90 degrees.  I don't know how he didn't clip my LH saddlebag.  Neither did the witness.

His RH mirror was folded up against the passenger window, there was a slight crease/scuff down both RH doors from my grip and clutch lever, and when he unfolded the mirror, the entire glass came out in his hand.  Think about it.  He hit me hard enough to fold his mirror hard enough to break all the attachment points on the back of the glass.  Valkyrie: 1  Ford: 0

Depending on the guy's wife, he hasn't taken a verbal assault like the one I gave him in a long time.  I certainly haven't delivered one like that in a long time - if ever.  His poor little puppy dog didn't know what to think.  If he hadn't been my Dad's age and if he'd been any more defensive he would have gotten a royal ass beating.  Royal.  Even the dude taking a smoke break on the side of the 7-11 was watching with interest.

It took a few minutes to cool down and quit shaking before resuming my ride home.

Had one pretty close to that a while back chevy 1500. We were close enough for me to push off his right front fender with my left hand. How we didn't touch I don't know I just threw the undees away too badly stained. Be careful and glad your OK.

Glad you are ok, I like the mirrors on my f 250. The visability in that truck is great with minimal blind spots, however the mirrors do stick out. Good thing they fold in easily.

Sounds like he either didn't KNOW he had hit you, or didn't care.  Was the impairment a temporary chemical one, or a lifelong mental one?  Wow, that pisses me off.

It's incredible your handlebars and mirror did so much damage and you still remained upright. Your instinctual riding skills must have kicked in. I'd think that 99% of riders would have gone down.

Had people passing me in my lane before. It does cause underwear damage. Have edged to more center (not dead center) riding when solo as a result.

Glad you are OK and that your riding skills saved you.  Glad also your not in jail for assault and battery, although that guy certainly deserved it. Also glad to hear there are good samaritans out there who are willing to get involved like that lady that followed you to help.

They are all trying to kill us!

Glad you're OK Dave. Something about those F250 drivers, had one talking on a cell, over a two lane
I-10 over pass, nowhere to go but the guard rail. His big ole wide mirror slapped my not so wide mirror (both left sides), slammed by mirror into the driver side door glass, shattered it, broke the mirror and the guy had the nerve to try and run. That big F350 caught him after a race down I-10. You'd never guess this, turns out, I knew the guy. He made plenty of excuses, apologized and paid for all repairs. I had already called 911 and had to cancel, she told me to just call back if the guy gave me any touble.

One other thing Dave, the NCHA Futurity will be at the Will Rodgers Colliseum from Nov. 21 for about 3 or 4 weeks, there will be plenty of Ford, Dodge, and Chevy duallies for you to play (practice) with. Not to mention those other big fancy rigs they'll be driving. Ride Safely.

Wow Dave, glad you are ok.  That was a close one.

After reading your post, I gotta ask.  Any chance he veered to the left to avoid hitting you in directly in the back?

Either way, it's a bad scenario.

Btw -  the instructor of the motorcycle safety class I attended strongly recommended riding in the left side of the lane.  When asked why, he replied with an event similar to yours.
