I killed this one on 11-14.  I have killed 4 so far, and lost another one that I KNOW was a good shot, but left no blood trail.  I know it was a good shot because I saw the hole in her as she ran off.

This big boy weighed 212 lbs filed dressed.  Probably right at 300 lbs or a little more live.

8 points.  21" inside spread.  My best by far, ever.

I am not a hater, but I am not a hunter, people get down on me for it, I don't have the need to kill things. The only requirement I have is eat what you kill, not just blast it and leave it to rot in the wild.  I can walk a block and get deer sausage so why would I buy equipment for hunting. Rather put it in my Valk.  So happy hunting!!

I don't hunt either. But your logic makes no sense. "I can walk a block and get deer sausage so why would I buy equipment for hunting." Do you think the deer jumped into the grinder itself? Someone had to do it.

Hunters are doing their part to maintain the ecological balance. As we spread and profligate we displace apex predators who otherwise keep deer populations in balance. By replacing those apex predators we not only do their job but we reduce dependence on farming and the meat industry. It's win/win.

I no longer hunt because of my age but the fallacy that we hunt because we want to 'kill' things is not the reason.

In fact we hunt for almost the same reason that we ride.  Being as one with the outdoors, fitting in and competing with animals on their own ground, lots of other reasons.  Hunters have contributed many dollars in fees to ensure that we conserve the species.  Conservancy is the right word.

The vision of drunks, good ole boys shooting at anything that moves, etc is incorrect.

Nice buck, Jabba, and a nice rack.

Sorry you didn't understand my logic. I didn't suggest that I don't eat meat or I am against hunting.  I just get annoyed when people type cast me like an animal rights freak because I don’t hunt.    But a block away is an old butcher shop that processes deer so I stop in get some venison sausage from time to time.
Now far as your ecological balance I hardly think Mother Nature needs help from us. We managed to contaminate the ground, water, sky and the foods we eat.  Look what is in your processed food, read the labels.  Look to see what country your foods comes from.  (I mean OOPS!! Sorry about the anti freeze in the baby formula and the animal food and the tooth paste.)  We as humans make such good decisions that are economy is not falling apart, we are not without jobs or watch out futures going down the drain. Maybe your right we need to be concerned about balancing the deer population.  Just go out there and enjoy yourself.

MANOMAN.......I'm a deer hunter also.   I took an 8 pt Sat morning but manoman.....he weren't but a little less than 1/2 the weight of your deer......that's a  monster size deer.    Huge rack also......congrats.

I hunt in the Austin Texas area where you have lots and lots of deer but they are smaller.   I look at killing deer as not only a conservation effort but also...........may have just saved another motorcyle rider........

Back in my younger days, I used to hunt the Bow season, then the Doe season and finally all sex deer season.

Used to keep the freezer well furnished.

I'll be cursed however, if I'll hunt deer in Iowa.   I hunted in Missouri where my father-in-law lived on a small acreage.

Got to use a firkin SLUG, I hate to injure them and then not be able to find them later.     I've shot a couple of good sized Bucks, took em to the locker and he found a slug or two in them......

Had a very sweet 30.06 with a scope on it and I could almost do an eyeball shot with it.    Always went for the heart, sometimes I got the lung instead, but they didn't stay upright very long.   At least I knew when the 30.06 got em, they were dead.

I miss going hunting with my father-in-law.   He was more like a father to me, than either of my step-dads.   Mom didn't have a good choosing mind.    Bless her heart.

I dont hunt either. Anvil has it spot on and it might come to it that we need to hunt.
I dont wanna clean it and really dont care for the taste. I know everyone says its how you cook it.
I dont really care. I have gone on hunts with my friends, and my brother and I survived weeks in the mountains with nothing. Again, Anvil gets to write the bumper sticker.

I think a lot of how a deer tastes has more to do with how it's killed and treated till it gets to the freezer, more so than how it's COOKED.

Often big bucks are killed while rutting and they can be strong.  This one is not.  I had one a couple years ago that was.  Sometime when you don't kill them clean, they get strong and/or gamey.  Mine usually are not.  I also process mine myself, so I KNOW how it was treated between the woods and the freezer.

This one was a dandy.  I hunt because I am, before anything else, a predator.  It's my heritage.

I'm like you in that I don't want (or really have time for) the hassle of preparing it and to me that's as much the point of hunting as the kill itself. Though I like the taste of venison I prefer other meats.

Jabba, you're right about handling. That's important with any meat. What I meant was that with a little skill you can take the toughest of cuts and cook it in such a manner to make it edible and even quite good.

Nice Buck. Kind of an unusually shaped rack, very unique.

Whole venison backstraps, marinated in Italian dressing for a day or two, then wrapped in bacon and cooked rare on the grill rock. Slice em up into steaks like prime rib after they're cooked.

I hate deer. . . . I say ‘club em like baby seals when they’re young and kill them all!’

Jabba; Very impressive northern (?) Indiana (?) buck! Anything near 200 field dressed is HUGE! (Must have slipped down from Michigan, eh?) Are you going to have it officially Boone & Crockett scored? I’m not seeing the “unusual shaped rack” that others are. It appears very symmetrical to me and with that spread, would score very well. The little extra point on the right side would only slightly detract from it’s over score. I shot an eight point years ago and it scored 162 (missed out by 8 points!) It only had an 18” spread but with nearly perfectly matched tines (one tine was ¼” longer than it’s matching one!) length of main beams were the same and the circumference matched. So, it literally had zero deductions. You can score it yourself ‘green’ to get some idea of where you’re at. Let us know! Again, that looks like a buck any hunter would be proud of! Nice job!

I usually hunt with a .54 cal Knight muzzleloader. I killed that one with a mossberg 12 ga, rifled, bolt action slug gun.

I am guessing that the rack scores 130-135. It's not real heavy and the tines are all sort of short. Spread and time length are good and it's very symmetrical. I needs to find a taxidermist.

I learned the other day that hittin em and chaseing them down isnt what ya wanna do. Let em find a nice place to lay down till they figure out what happened. Also that way the adreniline (?) and such dosent come on. I guess a perfect shot would deliver Bambi straight to the pearly deer gates.
Though I dont hunt I still have interest in learning and watch the hunting shows. i.e. TED.

Knight made very good muzzleloaders. My first several (17 I think) deer were taken with a .50 cal. black knight I built from a kit. When my youngest took his first deer with it I gave it to him. I shoot a TC encore now but it's not as accurate as that knight was.

I think I might have been less than clear about what I meant by an unusually shaped rack. I didn't mean a "non typical" as might have been inferred by my comment. I meant the rounded shape of the main beams as opposed to the more angular appearance of many of our Hoosier deer.

Beautiful deer, far larger than any I have yet taken and well worth mounting.

I'm still lookin' for a couple of B & C does.  Grin
