Son Andy took a buck today at the Newport ammo dump hunt. Looks like a nice one. Guess it was a long tough drag to get it out.

I'm the only one of the hunters in the family who hasn't taken a deer yet. Passed up several small ones so far this year though.

I won't intentionally shoot a small buck now although I shot many of them when the kids were young and the freezer was constantly empty. I'd really rather have a couple of does now but I'm just not finding em.

Proud and "deerless" Dad.

You got that right...I shot a 4 pointer last day of muzzle-loader up in Scott County, Tennessee several years ago.Probably would never shot it if not being in the woods all weekend freezing with just enough rain all weekend to keep you soaking wet. That last day was either sex and my friend and I had talked going into the woods from camp " If it's brown , it's down " . I got a decent shot on him however he bolted for the big gorge that was just ahead. It was all my friend Edro and I could do to drag it back up the side of that ridge...I've not been deer hunting since  Undecided

Every time I've ridden in your neck of the woods Joe I'm asking myself, "How do you get a deer out of these mountains?". My bud Jim, my son Joe and myself spent 4 hours dragging out Jim's buck last year that had crossed the creek on us. It was muzzleloaderer season and cold. The ice was breaking up on the creek and the water was cold and well over our boot tops. I can't imagine throwing a mountain or two into that drag.

The very last buck that I shot (.44 mag, Old model Super Blackhawk) fell right in the middle of bramble bushes. After I drug him out of that, I cheated.  I walked back to the farmers barn and borrowed his wheel barrow. Getting him into that wheelbarrow was a 14 karat cast iron b####.

Another hunting buddy of mine solved his dragging in a different way. He cut the deer in two and drug out the two pieces, walk back and drag, walk back and drag.

The last muley that I shot with a 7MM Mag, , I dragged down and out of a gully in Wyoming. The rancher helped me drag it the rest of the way, making sure that I was the one who was stumbling through the sagebrush, LOL.

Your son Andy has a mighty fine buck there.

The last time I went deer hunting it was not fun. Deep in the woods of eastern KY. with my brother-in-law we downed a big buck, about 180, while dragging it to the truck Billy Bob said that if we got hold on the antlers it would pull / drag better. And we would have something to hold on to. So we went around and got hold of the antlers and he was right, no hanging up in the brush. After about a 1/4 mile I said to Billy Bob, we was getting a long way from the truck. But we solved that by going and driving the truck around to the other side on the woods.    crazy2
