« on: November 22, 2011, 06:16:44 PM »

Was just out in the garage looking over the bike.  Discovered I need to replace the shock bushings.  Never noticed before, but it's obvious that at least the uppers are worn out.

But which ones.......Gary's shock bushings....

http://rattlebars.com/cart/bushings.html

Or Daryles at F6 Customs?

http://xf6-custom.com/partpages/bushings.html

Or OEM?

Both Gary's and F6 are polyurethane, but Gary's are half the cost of the F6 bushings.

And should I go ahead and replace both the upper and lower bushings?  I'm thinking yeah, I should, but the lowers don't look bad....just the uppers.

What do the VRCC gurus say?

I'm no guru but just changed out the shocks on my Interstate. I've used F6 Design XF6 two piece polyurethane shock bushing that are guaranteed for as long as you own the bike on my other two Valks and they work great.

I like F6 stuff.....have bought from him in the past.  Great guy......just wondering if paying double for his vs Gary's are worth the extra $$.

My lower bushings were toast.  But I didn't see anything amiss.  Was just changing them out for good measure when I did the uppers.

Can't comment on those brands.  I used VTX bushings on mine, based on what I read here.

Gary's work great, are cheaper and I think I like the one piece design better. He also ships fast.

I'm gonna check with the local Honda shop in the morning to see about the VTX "green" bushings (part number 52489-HN0-671).  If they've got them, I'll probably go with those.  If not, I'm gonna go with Gary's.  Can't see paying double unless they're just that much better somehow.

My vote.

Thanks,

Maybe I read the ad wrong but it seems that Gary's includes two bushings for one shock at $15.00 and F6 includes bushings for both shocks at $29.00 '*A SET INCLUDES LEFT AND RIGHT SHOCK bushings FOR VALKYRIES. THE VTX also uses these bushings, but REQUIRES TWO SETS'.
Am I correct?

Yes. Gary's posted that it is the top bushing that gives out and that is the "set" of 2 you replace. If you want to replace all your shock bushings, then you need 1 "set" per shock.

Gary mentioned that they also fit the Honda Shadow ACE Tourer I have, so I picked up 2 sets, along with another set of rear dampners from him this last Sept Oyster Run in the PNW.

I think the price included shipping, or at least the dampners did for $85. Then he would throw the shock bushings in for free shipping.

Am I correct?

"...on VALKYRIES only the top bushings on each shock need replaced so you'll need one pair. This is option 1 in the Paypal payment. On the VTX, both bottom and top go quickly (the picture shows a bad OEM bottom bushing after only 4,000 miles) so check and see if you need to order two sets. Both the top and bottom on both bikes are the same. to buy all 4 bushings, use option 2 in the Paypal payment button."

I read it to say that with a set (or "one pair") you get enough for both of your shocks uppers with opiton 1 for $15.  If you want to replace both uppers AND lowers on both shocks, then go with option 2....4 bushings for $30.

Am I wrong?

Just got my order from Gary today. Two sets of bushings and dampners. Fast delivery (just ordered them Sunday) and I can confirm he is a very nice guy. Used PayPal via email -easy. I got two sets just in case I find an IS for the right price. Smiley
Can’t wait to get them installed.

i don't understand why you would not buy from a vendor that supports this club. ands this site.  because when we don't have them anymore this place is going to get gone.  by the way the two piece bushing is better than the one piece.

cooldude  When the few vendors we have left are gone " That's It " ....As for this item " bushings " the two piece polyurethane that X-F6 offers are guaranteed for as long as you own the bike thats a no-brainer .I've got them on all of my Valkyrie's now with never a problem and none showing any wear ... If folks don't support the vendors that keep this site free to all of us the day will come when " That's It " .

How Is the two-piece bushing better? I can see no reason why it would be and I know a thing or two about that kind of thing. In all my years of working on various supsension types (including aircraft great and small) I've never seen a two-piece bushing used where a one piece bushing was possible.

Everyone here who's used Gary's one-piece bushings reports long life and good results and they're half the money. Personally I'd rather pay a 20 dollar per year membership fee here than have to listen to people bitch and moan at me about how I choose to spend (less of) my money on what I believe to be a better product.

You should spend your money on a Harley and support AMURRICA!!!   Roll Eyes

Well....I'm not sure what your accusing me of GOOSE, but let's see now.  Site sponsors I've supported (bought from).

Rattlebars.....bought a peg relo kit.

XF6......bought a guage relo kit.

Ultimate.....bought a 4 piece King set, studded, with rain covers.

Woody's.....bought a fairing.

Valkyrie Bling & More......several items both new and used.

Talisman.......bought a tank bib, studded with pouch.

Grumpys.....bought a set of Grumpy's tip.

Horseapple Ranch (MarkT)......bought a set of "piggy plates".

F6Rider......have bought way more than several t-shirts, decals and other items.

Various folks from the VRCC classifieds.....

Saddlebag rails

Complete 3 pc set of brand new side covers

Like new tank

Front fender

Rear fender front section

Rear fender rear section

Bike cover

Various other items.

I can take pictures of and provide receipts for all of the above GOOSE.

I've spend more than a few dollars with our site sponsors and supporters GOOSE.  And that doesn't include all of the stuff I've bought from places like Direct Line or ebay and other places.  I support the VRCC.......especially when they offer something I want.

What the hell have you bought from our site sponsors GOOSE?  You wanna match me dollar for dollar GOOSE?  You can take your foot out of your mouth now.

I think that there MIGHT be 3 or maybe 4 site sponsors that I haven't bought something from.

Mick-O-Pegs, that Stoney Brook cottage place, the guy that does those banners and patches, and F4 Custom windshields.

No one can blindly accuse me of not supporting our site sponsors without at least a response from me.  I've spent some pretty big money doing so.  When someone can't seem to "understand" why I'm not supporting this site and it's sponsors without knowing me and what I've spent here, well....that pisses me off.   tickedoff

I've said my piece.....I'm over it now.....going to eat some turkey.  So far, the smoke alarms haven't gone off yet.   Wink

No I'm not way off base. I stated MY feeling on the matter, I wasn't telling anyone else what they should do.

But you're completely missing the greater point which is; no one here has any business chastising (or questioning) how another member chooses to spend their money. I'll assume you don't like it when some H-D Kool-Aid drinker tells you to spend X amount more to support America by buying American bikes so don't pull that crap on other people. Please don't be a hypocrite because THAT is off base and out of line.

I personally WILL NOT pay nearly twice as much for a product that I do not deem worthy of the expenditure whether they support advertise here or not. This ain't a charity. You want my business? Improve your product and business model and I'll buy your products. If not I will buy it somewhere else. That's America and that's the way free markets work.

Guaranteed for as long as you own the bike .... June 2012 will be ( 13 ) years I've had one of my Valkyrie's ... I just don't think you can buy a better product than one thats guaranteed forever...Do you ?

I certainly think it's possible, yes. You've never had a "guaranteed" product that turned out to be crap? Because I have. That's not to say anything about the quality of the bushings, just that a guarantee really means nothing.

But again, that's all beside the point.

I ordered a set of shock bushings from Gary via PayPal last night. This morning, another forum member was kind enough to tell me Gary recently passed away. A quick search and I found this thread. I sent an email to Gary's account to see if anyone else is still offering them or even responding to his account. I'll post if/when I get a response.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for the update on Gary's.  Please do respond here as I'm sure a whole bunch of other folks would want to know also.   cooldude

I called paypal and explained the situation.  They filed a dispute on my behalf and gave me a refund in a week.  You would have thought they'd close his account so it didn't happen again.

Shock Bushings by Gary Eckermann Update

Some of know that Gary Eckermann has been selling poly shock bushings for the Valkyrie for a while now. After I posted that I ordered some of his shock bushings late last week, Sugarbear was kind enough to send me a message telling me he passed away. I sent an email to his email address, eckfam@clear.net to express my sorrow for their loss and to ask if the bushings are still available.
Yesterday I got an email from Portia, also at eckfam@clear.net informing me that the bushings are still available and that my order will go out on Monday. Great news, I thanked them for their effort to continue Gary's work. So, if you need a set of poly Valkerie bushings they are still availale for $15.00 plus $2.00 S/H. One set is two upper shock bushings. If you also need the lower bushings, send $30.00 for 2 sets. I paid for them through PayPal and sent the money to eckfam@clear.net
In my return email to Portia, I let them know I would post this on the forum.

All the best,

Mark

Just as Portia said my bushings were mailed from WA on Monday and I received them in the mail today (Wednesday) in Chicago. They went on easy as can be. My originals were shot at 15,000 miles.

Thank You Portia,

Mark
