No air leaks, motor runs fine, just won't pressure up the tank and it emits a foul burning smell.

Anybody got an idea what might be wrong or care to recommend a good replacement?

TIA

Get anothe HF.    Mine is like 15+ years old, no problem.

The big one at the shop is over 25 years old and all we have done to it is put new seals on the compressor.   It runs pretty much 24/7, except on weekends we shut it down.

This one was less than 100 bucks. Maybe I'll have better luck if I spend a little more money. Only got about 3 years out of this one.

What a coincedence .... My trusty porter cable pancake compressor did the same thing this week.  Foul electric burning odor while running.........running noticabley slower and more labored than normal, then next day DEAD as a door nail.

Lucky I got a $15 discount card for a purchase over 150 that with my military discount and Ill save $30 on a new one.

My suggestion......put a $5 price tag on it and put it in the from yard, it will be stolen in 5 minutes.........put "free" on it and it will be there all month.....then get a new one and dont worry again for a few years

I bought a HF pump last year, under $100, to replace the pump on my Campbell Hausfeld which finally bit the dust after 10 years cuz I didn't watch the oil level.  What a POS.  Smoked, no air delivery rate, couldn't even top off my tank between low & high water with stopping to rest.  Never mind pressuring it up from 0.  Took it back to HF & got my money back, and ordered the same as original C-H pump from Amazon.  This one runs like a champ, same as the original, with a 3hp motor turning it.  I got it for $30 less by ordering sans flywheel, since I already had that from the one I burned out. http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Hausfeld-VT2030-Cylinder-Flywheel/dp/B00081AKGA/ref=pd_cp_hi_1

My dads craftsman compressor did that last winter. Replaced some seals in it. All was fine. Getting to the seals was a bitch tho.

I'm sorry to hear that.  You don't normally see that kind of aggressive behavior in a garage appliance.

My Sears 60 gal compressor went belly up last summer, I actually got a tank/motor from a new (broken) returned Lowe's compressor (free)and ordered a two cylinder pump from HF for about 87 bucks..reshaped the plumbing, hooked it all together and it's been working great, pumps up quickly, holds pressure better than the Sears did..though I don't expect it to last as long, it does the job.

Yep, checked the oil. It has a sight glass so it's pretty easy to keep an eye on it.

After shopping around a bit, it appears that another HF is the way to go. Might check the local Walmart and see what they have and how it compares to HF.

My pooch tried to screw my air compressor!  Of course he tries to screw a lot of things....even the neighbor.  And I don't like the way he looks at me once in  awhile.  Shocked  Hoser

Save money in the long run.  Buy a  Campbell Hausfeld.  I have a 60 gallon upright in the corner on my garage. Been there close to 20 years. I have replaced 1 pressure switch, that is it.  I change oil every couple of years or so.
