Ok being new to my fat girl 2000 interstate blue and sliver,
the side cover on the right side is flopping in the breeze.
its not the side cover its self BUT the little tab that it hooks in to
in front,  the peace that goes across and catches both of the front
tabs of the covers. now i am thinking that because of the nature of the
way this thing works. that this HAS to be a common problem.
SO can this part be had or do i half to get creative?

I'm sure there will be responses, and you can use the search function from the Home page. Search for side cover tab. I remember someone saying they used JB Weld and a box staple to fix this. Anything is do-able...

I've got a broke one and repaired with Industrial Strength VELCRO it's been on there better than 9 years now with no problems...Does'nt matter to me if you go this route or not but you should do something if its floppin' in the wind cause the day will come when it takes flight .

Drill  a small hole in the cover where it overlaps with the front cover and use a small countersink screw to retain.

If you have chrome covers and use a chrome screw it almost disappears.
If you have colored covers use matching touch up paint to cover.

I keep meaning to fab up a permanent replacement with a 1/4 turn fastener but for now I have the velcro and a piece of red duct tape. It ain't going anywhere.

Back when I bought my Valk, the center piece had the right side tabs broken and the previous owner had the right hand cover held on with a piece of clear packing tape.  It wasn't noticable unless you looked really close.

Or.....you could just buy a new one from places like Directline or BikeBandit.  There's usually some used one on ebay.

I actually have one that I picked up from The Yard, though I never use it. I was kinda making a joke about the wives and the fact that they have a habit of "leaving with stuff" when they go.  Wink

Center cover.  Item #17 on this page from DirectLine......

http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=148041&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1997&fveh=3465

Note that the DirectLine page for that center cover is for a '97 and the color choices are just for '97's.  If your color isn't listed on that page, just go the listing for your year Valk to find the color you need.

Here's one on ebay.  It looks like it needs paint, or at the least, the tape residue cleaned off of it.  Usually there's more than just one.  Usually Pinwall has a bunch listed....mostly black.  (Pinwall is a used parts dealer on ebay that usually has tons of used Valk parts......some good, some not so good).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/00-Honda-Valkyrie-GL1500-1500-SEAT-CENTER-COVER-/200679774975?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2eb9725aff

I just re-read your post and noticed that you have an Interstate.  The directline page I gave the link to is for a standard........HOWEVER.......they're ALL the same.  You just need the right color for yours.

It's not hard to change out the center cover.....kinda a pain the tookus, but not all that hard to do.  Just take your time with it.

Just make sure you re-install the tip over switch right side up.  Don't ask me how I know this is important!   Embarrassed  Grin. Hoser

You might want to look into the two write-ups below posted by unsung authors. Depending on which half of the locking tab is broken, one fix applies more than the other. Click on pics for steps on the repairs.

Fubar. I had the same thing happen to a nipple on a side cover on my 91 Goldwing. I live in southern California, I sent the side cover to a man in San Dimas CA. He does plastic welding. He repaired the side cover, now its stonger than new. If it happens again on my Wing or my Valkyrie, it s going to him. Very resonable too, and less hassle than trying to find used and repainting. PM me and I'll give you the 411. Or, if everyone is interested, I'll post his information.
