Vasily Alekseyev a Russian weight lifter big in the 70s has died. I remember watching this guy on Wide World Of Sports more than once. Didn't care if he was Russian or not. Every time you turned around seemed like he was setting a new lift record. R I P Vasily. I enjoyed your work when you were in your prime.

He's one of the weight lifters that got me more interested in lifting than body sculpting when I was younger.
You can't tell looking at me now My best ever bench press was 425 lbs. Best ever clean and jerk was I think close to 430 lbs Then I went from trying to lift a big weight once to trying to lift a weight repeatedly. Got to be a member of the 900 club. Bench 300 10 times Squat 300 10 times Military press 300 10 times. What people do now with the aid of drugs legal and illegal is crazy.

I was up to 24 0unces when I quit last. Vasily is one of the pioneers. Paul Anderson was pretty good too in the power lifter days, My Dad a life long weight lifter was pretty good and worked out with wrestlers at Paschalls Spa in Knoxville Tennessee. He would mess with us kids as we would talk him in to lifting the front end of Volkswagens about a foot. Dad talked about Paul Anderson a lot and I saw a video once where he,lifted a small Elephant on platform with his back. Paul later in life was confined to a wheel chair and proclaims to have found Christ at that time. Thankful to be still alive after all his weight lifting stunts.

Old weight lifters never stop trying they just take longer to recover. Aleve is a good friend of mine In no particular order. Bad left ankle, bad right knee, bad left elbow, bad right shoulder, creaky neck and a few ripped/torn muslces here and there. It's an addiction Now I just do lotsa reps with light weights and varying grips. Not much squatting due to the various weakend joints. Cycling is the leg workout.

Britnan...those 900 club numbers are pretty impressive One of my party tricks when I was youger was to lie on the ground. Have someone stand on my hands shoulder width apart. Have that person supported and then lift them straight up in the air a few times. Another was blowing up rubber kitchen gloves until they popped. Did it a couple of times with a hot water bottle but didn't like the feeling in my chest and head. I could rip a hard apple in two by twisiting it apart. Made a nice clean break along the core. Used to do the crucifix on 2 ropes and then push down with my hands until my arms were parrallel with my body. One arm chin ups were easy as were one arm push ups. I once read about Asian Indian strong men who trained to lift their body off the ground. Lay face down on the floor arms at your side palms down. Then by pushing down with arms and toes bounce off the floor and move yourslef side to side or backwards and forwards. That was easy. Max bicep size was 23 inches. Now the buggers are shrinking. I'm at about 19 1/2 on a good day. Another was a star push up. Face down arms extended and apart and legs apart so you looked like a X. Then push down with finger tips and toes to do a body off the ground push up. Other silly stuff. Makes me feel worn out just thinking about it. All this because I couldn't press 60 pounds above my head when I was 14 and some of the other kids could. It's a funny old world. Now at the gym I'm one of the old geezers straining and wheezing just to show the young whipper snappers how it should be done. Too many of them have really bad form and will suffer when they are older.

Big time weight lifter too.....back in the day Best bench press was close to 500lbs, with my wife spotting for me! Her and I would go to the gym and workout together. When I bench pressed she would spot for me. As I went up in weight, there would be some big guys come over and ask if I needed a spot. I'd just say no thanks, my wife is fine. I had taught her how to spot for me, and it worked. She would just follow the bar down with her hands just under it. It felt like she was lifting the weight with me, but of course she couldn't have been lifting that kind of weight. But to me it was mind over matter. I was always able to finish my set with her spotting. Got a lot of strange looks though. And, yes for the most part the big guys stuck around to watch, just in case. Started to get hurt alot. Had a heart attack this year, that was a huge wake up call. Now, I mountain bike alot. Big weights are over for me.

I visualized marshmallows or clouds at the end of the bars when the weight got heavy. Now I just use pain

Britman.......True on the mind over matter. One thing about having my wife spotting for me....I knew I had to get the weight.....gives you some extra motivatation to get the weight With the way I had her spot for me, it really did feel like she was "helping" me lift it up and down, of course she wasn't, but in my mind she was. Also, lifting that kind of weight, to me anyway, is as much about the spotter as the lifter. A good spot means everything to me.....a bad spotter can at the minimum, ruin your lift, at the worst, get you hurt......thats why I used my wife as much as possible. Some big guys, that you would think would know all about spotting heavy weights, were knuckleheads I showed my way to spot to some guys and they used it after that....

I will still occasionally tear the phone book in half as the grandkids get a kick out of it. Other than that I was known to tear them and leave them by the front door when young men would bring one of my daughters home late! Their name wold be on the cover.

Did a bit of power lifting years ago. Now we trot a bit and train on a bowflex. Hurts a lot more now than it used to, but still terrific therapy.
We trudge on (with a number of worn out joints).
