"The mountains are calling and I must go."

She somehow knows when company is coming. Sometimes an hour before they get here but always well in advance of their arrival.

My daughter texted me that she was on the ways here and minutes later Miss Ellie started raising hell, jumped on my chest and barked in my face until I had to put her in time out (her crate). She continued to bark for almost an hour until the daughter arrived.

She had no way of knowing she was on the way and even if she could read, she didn't see the message on the phone. She's normally quiet as a church mouse when we're here alone so it's a sharp contrast when she starts her yapping.

Dogs are amazing aren't they? I could have sworn mine gave me a head nod of approval/understanding when I told him something this weekend.

My Welsh Corgi Jack (RIP 2/2011) knew a whole lot more English than I knew dog.  He was a keen observer of body language too.

Before our dog died, I swear that all I had to do was simply think about going for a ride and she'd start to get all worked up head for the door.

You would be amazed at all the subtle clues dogs pick up on...

Body language is an amazing thing, including the way you hold yourself and move.

I once had a dog while living in an apartment.  He would bark at ANYONE who passed outside, even though he could not see out the window.  Amazingly, not a sound from his mouth if it was ME was walking up to the door.

All I can figure is that he knew how my foot steps sounded... and would be sitting at the door waiting patiently when I opened it... but not a sound from him.

The best part... even if I had someone WITH me... he could pick me out and not make a sound.

My dog knows when it is my wife's SUV coming up the street (about an 1/8 of a mile) without looking.

She pays no attention when other cars turn up the road, but as soon as my wife's vehicle turns onto the street (the dog can't see this) she takes off towards the door.

I too have witnessed what I deem as dogie ESP. When growing up we lived about a mile off a main highway and everynight when my dad was returning home our dog would look that way and start barking. Dad would turn in the drive a few minutes later. Never failed. On a side note - dog is truly man's best friend. If you don't believe this, lock your dog and your wife in the trunk of your car and after an hour has passed open the trunk and let them out and see who is happier to see you!
