Went to replace my air filter last weekend and found out I have a K&N filter in there. Never used one, and don;t have any friends who have. (dirt riders mostly) Are any of you using one? what do you think? Just looking for opinions about this product.

I've had 'em in both my Valks. Wouldn't call them a "must have", but if I ever get another Valk I'll put one in it, too. Some don't like them, but I have no complaints. YMMV

Just seems like common sense to me. Why keep buying an air filter when you can reuse the one you've got. With both my current jeeps I stopped at the parts store to buy a K&N on the way home from the dealer. Clean the one in my jeep every 6mo, the one in the wife's every year. The one in the valk every oil change

Anyone have a part no for the K&N air filter? I had one on my GL1100 and liked it fine. I could search, but this thread is just sitting here... Fred.

Good practice...some think just because it is a million mile filter you never need to clean it. It is true that the efficiency goes up as the filter gets dirtier, but the oil will dry out, especially in dusty conditions. The filter should get cleaned and freshly oiled at least every 12 months. K&N states this somewhere buried in their instructions....

Got the kit, and cleaned it up. Will install it tonight when she's dried out and oiled up. I do like the sound of better air flow.

. The one in the valk every oil changeBleghh... I change my oil around 4k or 5k, usually pick some afternoon when I get home from work, so the oil will be hot and drain good. I bet I'd procrastinate the heck out of that job if I had to take the tank off too -Mike

You don't need to completely remove the tank, just take off the handle to the fuel valve and disconnect both bolts. Oh you need to have a buddy to hold up the tank while you remove the screws. I think once a year will work for me, but i'll check it next oil change and see what it looks like. I've put 7,000 mi. since I got her and it was just a bit dirty under where the air actually dumps in. I did pull an intact fly and honey bee out of the fome chamber.

The Valkyrie has had one since 1998.
The Chevy Trike has had one from only God's knows how far back.
Dodge Dakota has had once since new, 6,000 miles ago.
Toyota Highlander has had one since new, 10,000 miles ago.
I own it, I change it.

i have a K&N air filter in my truck, van, and cycle. the thing i like about 'em is that i don't have to buy another. BUT they DON'T filter as much as a paper filter does. i can prove this 'cause when ever i clean or check my filter i can write my name in the dust on the "clean" side of my filter. it's not just my cycle, it's that way with all three of my vehicles. here's my thought, i've saved money on buying filters, but have i sacrifised my engine because of it? those tiny dust particles have to end up somewhere!!
oh, i've got 134k miles on the van, 105k on the truck, and 70k on Val. (30k with a K&N)

I had a K&N on a Duramax pick-up. I took it out for the same reason, too much dirt getting through. A study of various air filters was posted several years ago on the Diesel Place forum and showed the same results: more air and more dirt will pass through a K&N. I was recently told by a diesel mechanic that the turbo charger bearings wear out much faster on trucks using K&N filters. But as always, YMMV.

I like the idea of using the foam pre-filter also. There is enough dust in the air from road construction everywhere around here and that would haunt me if I wasn't using one.

Good data here. Back in my 4-wheeling days, K&N was considered to be the dirtiest filter and the AFE was best. I have been running an oiled AFE in Cummins for 5 yrs now but might switch the AFE's lifetime dry filter which I run in my Corolla. Won't put a K&N in my Valk; too dirty and tired of cleaning oiled filters.
