So, my Explorer has been totaled and I received the offer and paper work from the insurance company today.  One thing that I read on the document has me worried and I'm hoping someone in this group has dealt with before, the document states that a salvaged vehicle cannot be driven on a Texas highway.  I've seen salvaged vehicles for sale, are they just for parts?  Do I have to apply for a special salvage title before I can drive it?

I can't haul the whole family around on the Valkyrie (there, Valk related).

Thanks!

Wizard bought a Valk with a salvage title, rebuilt the bike and got it titled as a Rebuilt, I believe.  There was an extra inspection involved.

You may have seen his "Black Magic" bike?

Hey Houdini , basically what they're saying is , here in Texas you cannot drive that vehicle or bike UNTIL it has been inspected and deemed safe to drive on Texas Roads , after that you can DRIVE or RIDE  ...  people tend to shy away from salvage titles because the word  " wrecked " come into their mind .... And later on its SOMETIMES hard to sell and the potential buyer has to be told of the salvage status  ....  if you put your truck back together and get it inspected and it passes then your good to go , thats all ... Thanks the Geezer crazy2

I bought back and had repaired a totaled car of mine in Indiana.  One thing the (other guy's) insurance company that paid the claim told me was that they would never pay another claim on that vehicle, regardless of fault.  It was worth the risk for me and the car was in another accident and repaired without question by a different insurance company.  I don't think I had to file a salvage title.

To my knowledge, in California none of that is required. Indeed, the car I just traded has a Salvage title since 1996.
In California, the OWNERSHIP TITLE reads "SALVAGE" @ the top right corner. Wink

Notwithstanding, about 15 years ago my dishonest neighbor (2funny ) took his Salvage-Titled-Truck and registered in
another state... @ his friend's address. Then, drove it back with out-of-state plates and a "clean title."  Embarrassed

Two years later, he registered it in California... again and got a Clean California Title.  Shocked
I don't think one could do that these days though. That's a GOOD change.  Smiley

Chuck, Lisa (my other half) was a cop.  I asked her about it.  Geezer is correct.  If you take the Explorer to be inspected and it passes, then no problem.  If the damage was more than the vehicle is worth, even though nothing on the vehicle itself was damaged,  they total the vehicle and they issue a salvage title.    It doesn't mean the vehicle is no good.   So get it inspected and if it passes then great.  BTW what was the price of the rack that got damaged?  Lisa had a car with a door ding on the drivers side,  that was enough to affect the electronics in the door.  The insurance totaled it for that reason and she just had it inspected, they passed it and she drove it for 5 years afterwards.

The Explorer just has a very minor dent in the bumper, a hatch that is very scratched and has a couple of small dents and a busted taillight.  The bent up hitch and thrashed carrier is what drove the price over the edge, I have every intention of keeping and repairing the vehicle.

BTW what was the price of the rack that got damaged?

I found one online that was similar, it was $695 but the one I bought was off eBay and cost $400.

Thanks for the info TJ, I'm going to call them on Monday.

His insurance company sent me a check for $300 today for pain and suffering; I didn't have any pain but I turned their check into an iPhone 4S, Siri is pretty cool.
