Just replaced the throttle cables.... all fine except that throttle closes slowly when handlebars are turned hard right.... Shocked

Doesn't seem to be any other way to route the cables, and they are exactly as before when no problem.

Free play at the grip is about 3mm

Problem happens when cable curve is slightly compressed.

Repeatedly using the throttle seems to clear it.

Will it just bed in you reckon?? ???

Huh? ???

I just had the same thing happen to me when I reassembled my bike, and I posted and they said to loosen the cable a bit more...which I did and the binding went right away.

Um, a cruise type thing that holds the throttle open as you cruise. Sometimes they can bind the grip from closing esp if you have kury grips.

Hedge,

Did you replace with standard length or did you extend the cables??  I just ordered some risers and I believe that I will need to replace both throttle and clutch.  Where did you get yours?

Thanks,

Willie

Thanks, sorry for my ignorance. Embarrassed

They are just standard Honda OEM cables, thing is the cable has plenty of length, it just doesn't shut off fully when turned to the right. ???

Justooneez gave you the correction for the problem.

You have the cables adjusted too tight!

There needs to be more free play in the cables.

That's why you are getting the binding.

Very dangerous.

Mine do the same thing because I don't care for any freeplay at all so I keep my cables with no slack to speak of but like you it's only when they're turned hard right so I don't worry about it. I'm never more than barely on the throttle when I'm at full-lock.

I have no slack in my cables either and all is good. If it only does it at full lock I wouldn't worry about it. Hard to drive at full lock.

I had mine done by motion pro. Really good guy to work with. We set a cable length and he would call me when they are done to set up shipping since I was Sturgis bound shortly. He helped push the order ahead to.

Thanks everyone. Smiley

The cables have to be adjusted fairly tight to get the spring to pull the throttles fully closed quickly, but there is still about 3mm of play at the grip, which I think is within tolerance.

The sticking is only at 3/4 throttle or more on full right lock, so, as the cables appear secure I think I'll live with it.

Perhaps this is a more likely problem to arise, given that there are 6 carbs to shut (may explain why the choke cable is a bit stiff, even when new also (as now) ). Better than it was anyway..but still stiffer than you'd think.

Great site this - you are all really helpful, especially to a newbie with little mechanical knowledge like me. Cool

Many thanks for making me feel welcome.

My custom length cables are Motion Pro too (as is my very reasonably priced speedo cable). I've used them several times before and they're always GREAT people to work with.

Besides the safety factor, the only problem I see developing from too tight cables is a wearing of the throttle cable components, or a stretching of the parts that will deform: plastic, cable, guides.

You can have very little play with a straight ahead steering and some binding when the bars are at lock.

When that situation starts to easy up, and it would seem that the parts are wearing in like "the throttle is turning easier and the tightness is disappeared" realize that wear in that particular area of the system may not be favorable.

The thought of being stranded in BFE is not a good one.
