Ya never know how many good Summers ya have left.

« on: December 06, 2011, 07:08:22 PM »

Been working on my 30 plus year old tractor....

Got the lights working!!!!!  I don't remember the last time they worked..

This Saturday we will be giving hayrides at the City park... Have bench seating built into the 18 ft gooseneck trailer...  will buy a bale of hay to spread out to make it a hay ride... but couldn't afford the 13 bucks a bale they want for hay here, to line the trailer and make seats....  would take 20 bales... and the cow and horse folks need the hay a lot more than I do....

Sooo.. bought lumber and built seating....

I will be pulling the trailer with the tractor, and needed lights to get back home after dark....  Have the head lights working... rigged up the tail lights on the trailer to plug into the tractor.... also have an amber strobe hooked up ... plus my slow moving vehicle triangle on the trailer...When I get home from the hayride.... we are having a spaghetti dinner here at the house for folks that bring an unwrapped present for our Blue Santa toy Drive....Last year we had a TRUCK full of toys for the kids!!!!  Pretty Cool!!!!

  Gonna be a busy weekend!!!!!

Hey I got mine working too!... er... well, OK, the tractor man fixed them
when he hauled it into town last year  Wink I don't have any hayrides to lead, but
I do need to use the tractor, and it has a blown manifold gasket (I hope that's all)
now... really makes a racket, I'll have to fix it before I use it again (no, not sending
it into town for manifold gasket...)

Sounds like a great time for the participants.  I am sure your efforts will be appreciated.  Makes me wonder if we have something like that around here.

Mine is a Case International  485.  Red and Black..... well kinda... more like rusty faded red/orange and black now..LOL
50 hp diesel.... it has never failed to start and run...and runs strong....
Looking for a frontend loader to put on it... sure would be handy for lifting and moving things around the place.

We are looking forward to the hayrides!!!!  I remember them when I was a kid.... but that was usually hauling hay in from the field...LOL... When I was too small to pitch hay bales, I would drive the tractor while the bigger guys loaded the wagon.  Now I think I'm too old ta pitch hay..LOL.. coolsmiley

Makes me think of my last hay ride.  I was 16 years old and I broke my girl friend's front tooth when the trailer hit a bump.  Her dad was driving the tractor.  Yes, we are still friends, but not that close...Jim Grin

I have a ford jubilee that needs a new exhaust manifold... it is cracked, but gets used at least once a week.  maybe this winter i will spring for a new one between snows.

Glad to hear from you Mark. I'm sure you'll give one hell of a hay ride!!!!

This was my great grandfathers 1947 Model A restored. It caught fire a few years back while my cousin was mowing hay with it. I was proud to have gotten the chance to drive it in the parade before it turned to scrap.

Reb...
Cool Tractor!!!!  My Grandpa had an old JD... but we couldn't take it on parade.... Had steel lug wheels.... we had to lay down timbers to cross the road with it to keep from tearing up the road.....
It also had an open flywheel... had to stick a handle in it to crank the motor to start.... I remember it backfiring and brealing my Grandpa's arm...
With the 6 inch steel lugs... ya never spun a wheel...LOL
It also had 2 fuel tanks.... gasoline in one to get it started and warmed up.... then my Grandpa would switch to kerosene... much cheaper back in the day to run the tractor....Guess that was the original 'flex fuel'

Don't have any tractors anymore. Sold my last one a few months ago to pay medical bills, but here's a few of the ones I've owned over the last ten years.

I have a '37 JD un-styled Model B that's been yard art for many years. Its kinda rough, but its all there, with a "stuck" motor. Restoration will be on the agenda after I retire.

One of the rear wheels on our 8-N got to where it was rotting out pretty badly.
Late one fall a few years ago, I was using the tractor, and the wheel gave up
the ghost. I left the tractor out all winter and got a new wheel the next spring.
The tractor was definitely the-worse-for-wear from sitting out all winter.

If you could drag that JD under a shed somewhere, you'd have a lot more to
work with come retirement time....  cooldude

Its been sitting out most of its life. I'm not in a coastal climate so the environment isn't too corrosive. I've had it for fifteen years. I don't see any difference in it now as compared to when I acquired it. I do plan to make a shed to work in when the time comes.

I sold my rare Allis Chalmers at auction in 93 when my father-in-law passed and we had an auction at the farm.

It was a 1957 WD45 wide front end, Diesel.   The engine was supplied to Allis by Budda.   It was a 6 cylinder, and talk about torque.  If you could get traction you could pull it.

One time the wife and I were at the farm and dad had tickets to a car race in Kansas City.

I had to disk a field before we could go.   Yeah, I over slept and no one woke me up.   When I finally got up grandpa said if you are going to the race with me, you best get your arse out in that field and get it done.

I wiggled to get through the gate, and dropped the disc in the ground.    Started out in 3rd gear, that was going to take too long so I dumped her into road gear.   Yup she pulled that disc and threw clods about 40', well almost that far anyway.

I got done, pulled up to the gate and shut her down, run in the house, and ran through the shower, got dressed and opened the rear car door as dad was pulling out the driveway.

He never asked me to use my tractor to disk again....    LOL......

Tried pulling a 3 bottom plow in 5th, but it kind of bogged down on the uphill climb, So I used 3rd on that deal.

Wish I had the old bastard back now.     It had a rear blade, for dirt, snow or what have ya.    Had a 3 bottom plow for it, Hay Baler but forgot the make, it produced small square bales, combine, sickle mower  and a few other utensils.   Paid $300 at auction for it and the equipment in 1988.    When we had dad's auction we sold the pieces separately.   It brought over $3,300 that way.    Tractor alone brought $1,200 for the shape it was in, by that, it was pretty rough looking.
