I'm surprised that more care wasn't taken to "look down-field" so to speak.  Who in their right mind test-fires a cannon TOWARDS a town  uglystupid2

I mean really...when I go out to shoot my gun, I don't put my backstop at someone's front door....

Say it out loud...  CANNON = BFG (big F#^$%# Gun)

Idiots?  They are doing something they love to do, many people like them, they look like they have tons of fun doing it, take many precautions to be safe (accidents do happen), and have gotten a lot of people interested in science.  And I really like the show, have watched it since day 1. But, everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it might be.  lol.

On a positive note, it was just a cannon ball and not a cement truck.

I wonder how they are going to handle this episode on the show!
If past shows are any measure, they won't shrink from admitting wrong, showing the whole thing during the episode, and apologizing.
They are normally pretty careful, but everything is so dangerous and untested, things are bound to go wrong sometime.

You reaching pretty far to call me a bully because I'm taking issue with what was clearly a very stupid decision. I've seen them do experiments with firearms (just rifles no less) at a big dry lake bead before. Was the giant dry lake bed not available on this day? Nobody was killed in this mishap, that appears to have only been through the grace of god or dumb luck. Besides, those idiots aren't going to see this.

But what if someone had been killed? Think about the repercussions that could have. Next thing you know the anti gun-crowd is trying to come up with even more restrictive legislation regarding where and what you can shoot. If you think that it's a reach to think that the fallout over something like this couldn't affect firearms all the way down the line then you're wrong. In fact, it might anyway! I'll imagine that the range they used will be affected by this stupidity.

They're "idiots" because clearly they don't understand the dangers of working with artillery. They also conduct their experiments haphazardly with almost no scientific method or procedure so the "data" they collect is little more than worthless. In a lot of cases they fail to effectively bust any myths at all.

even the 'experts' can miscalculate badly. years ago we all shook our collective heads over an 'experienced' elk hunter that was left by his friends with only a rifle and a jean jacket.

hypothermia set in and he died, shocking I know.

My Nieces husbands late father Nick, A great machinist, hunter and  a real good shooter made a black powder cannon. Not big, fires a one inch lead ball. The thing is maybe 12 /14 inches long. Milled steel, nicely done. Uses smokeless Black Powder. Holy Cow can this thing break stuff!!! Loud. Without a ball just wadding OMG!! destroys cement block, doubled 5/8 plywood. They had some balls made with wheel weights much harder then lead because of the antimony in them, shot through an over three inch thick tree.  The Myth Busters got real lucky they did not kill anyone.

Several years ago me and a buddy built a half-scale civil war cannon. 1 1/2" smooth bore. We made 16 ounce balls and mini balls out of wheel weights. Charge was 2 to 4 (max) ounces of black powder. The power behind that charge and a one pound projectile was amazing. We made a mortar that shot bowling balls -- clean out of sight to the naked eye with four ounces of powder. I can't imagine a 30 pound ball -- and going through a house and a mini van before the dust settled! How much powder was behind it? And how far away was the house that they bombed? They do some interesting experiments, but on a Sheriffs dept. range? "Assuming" they had ordnance experts supervising, I'm curious to know what exactly they did wrong. Incredible stroke of luck that nobody got killed in the process.

This isn't even the 1st time they have lost a cannon ball.

When they did the steam cannon thing they launched a cannon ball a mile on the airstrip.  They finally found it... but it took them like 4 hours to figure it out.  It went the length of the airstrip, and the levee on the end caught it.

They're decisions concerning what is possible and what is not are not always right. They did two episodes trying to prove/disprove the possibility of a "robin hood", one arrow splitting another and decided both times it's not possible. But, I have two sets of "robin hooded" carbon arrows here at the house.

That being said, I'd love to have their jobs and we have to remember, their main job is to get good enough ratings to stay on the air. Their firearms experiments have all been pretty well done in my opinion. They've made some mistakes as we all have. But........

I don't think any of main characters have woke up stupid a day in their lives.

Remember the one where they tried to prove that you couldn't be killed by a falling bullet? Their conclusion was that you could not. But you most certainly can, the problem with the experiment was that they fired the bullets straight up in the air. A "falling" bullet (as in falling from a rest) does not have a high enough terminal velocity to do more than give you a nice lump. But a bullet fired on an arc that never has a chance to stop in air? You could ask the Kuwaitis about that one.

But that's my point about these guys. They also failed to take the Coriolis effect into consideration when conducting the experiment so they had a hell of a time finding the bullets once they landed. They really not all that equipped to be working with guns. They're not scientists. They're personalities.

Anvil...
You must not of watched the full episode because at the end of that experiment that was exactly their conclusion a bullet fired in a arc could definitely be fatal but a bullet fired exactly straight up would not!

Oh no, I watched it. But it was not "their conclusion". If you can find the episode online then watch it because they originally draw the conclusion that it's a myth, but they are corrected by someone else and they amend their conclusion.

Your right. I forgot about that episode. I think if they had tried it with a 500 or 750 grain or heavier bullet they might have had a different conclusion even firing them straight up.

Gave me much more respect and understanding what the guys on ships in the old days had to contend with when under attack with cannons. I love the scene when lord Becket gets whats comming to him. I guess when the deck starts to come apart it could happen that way.
